exhaust manifold

Recommended Posts

I have a crack in my exhaust manifold, it looks as though i can get to it with the arc welder but dont know if i should. If i disconect the batt and cover the engine (so i dont start a fire) will all the electrics be ok when i reconect the batt?

I think i'v read somwhere ex mani-s a very difficult to weld, not sure tho. Your electrics should be fine with batt disconnected

There are spcialised welding rods for cast. The job is best done with the manifold off the engine, this will allow you to pre heat the manifold in readiness for welding. I would add however that with all the grief of extracting an 8V exhaust manifold, why not just get a good used item and replace it in the knowledge that the job is done and will not be a further problem. A manifold from the breaker is likely to cost no more than £40.

4stud, what engine do you have? I have a 16V (KR engine) exhaust manifold under my desk, here at work, all boxed up and ready to send out... yours for £40 delivered... 8) (If you've got a 1.8 16V anyway! )

I have had really good luck brazing cast iron exhaust manifold as well. If it is just cracking then you can always grind the crank out and then have it brazed, it should work well. If you can get a good deal on a used one then that would be the better route.
