Red_16v 0 Posted March 28, 2005 hi everyone I've had my 1990 1.8 16v for nearly a year now with no problems at all. within the last week i've had a few problems getting 3rd and 4th then coming back from the west sussex cgti meet yesterday it got really bad. the cars drivable and you can easily select all gears with the engine off and also driving at low revs but anything over 4000rpm loses 3rd and 4th. 1st to 2nd is fine but it takes all my effort to get 3rd or 4th but 5th is then fine :? i've checked for the missing circlip, it wasnt there but even after replacing it, its made no difference. any ideas. sorry to bring this topic up again. VR6 0 Posted March 28, 2005 Engine/gearbox mount? Based on the fact that you can select gears whilst not moving.
Guest Posted March 28, 2005 A very common problem with a few different solutions. If the motor mounts are worn it cain cause hard shifting so check the mounts. The side-to-side cable end can wear and this can allow this sort of problem as well so check into that. The last item that I can think off of hand is the shifter may be out of adjustment, it is easy to do so I would check that Adjusting shifter. Check the last item in the thread, this shows how to adjust the shifter. I have heard of the shifter forks coming loose or a problem with the selector assembly on the top of the transmission, it may also be in there. Hope this helps, Dennis
Red_16v 0 Posted March 28, 2005 right. just got in now. a complete disaster tonight. same problem as mentioned but the car got jammed in 4th gear with a whole lot of crunching and generally bad noises. even holding the clutch down did nothing. eventually i managed to wrestle it to neutral and coast to a lay by. i've just got towed home by my dad and only have 1st gear. nothing else. i'm guessing this is something fairly major. just need to try to speak to a few people tomorrow after work. Guest Posted March 28, 2005 Check the selector assembly on the outside of the gearbox where the cables attach to or the shifter forks, probably find the problem there. Dennis
G60Jet 1 Posted March 29, 2005 as above or the cable guides are worn, happened to mine
Red_16v 0 Posted March 29, 2005 Thanks a lot for the replies guys. I've got a local mechanic coming over tomorrow to have a look. I've mentioned what was said on here so i'll see how it goes. Tim
Storm 0 Posted March 29, 2005 Tim, You've got both JMR and G-Werks round the corner. No disrespect to the local guy, but unless he knows V-dubs his diagnosis / repair wont be as good as a specialist.
Red_16v 0 Posted March 30, 2005 yeah, i know but to be honest i have no realy way of getting it down to either as i only had use of 1st gear! The local mechanic has managed to free up all gears except 2nd so the car is drivable but only just. He's going to have a better look tomorrow but then maybe i'll give JMR a call and book it in.
