CaiosG60 PWR

My gearbox saga (finally finished)

Recommended Posts

Thats exactly what I'm wondering!

The two one ebay have different flanges on them.

Ones on this look like ones on my G60

Ones on this one dont

Cheers for advice on non-turbo box. Was hoping it was the same as turbo one. Wouldnt mind not being able to get to 120 but dont fancy having to change gear every couple of seconds. :-)

you do need to swap the drive flanges over, the 20vt ones are 108mm and you need 100mm ones,as for swaping the G60 ones over you cant, the 20vt ones have a bolt down the middle to hold them in were as the G60 ones have a snap ring on them,i'll put the part numbers up later, busy spraying car wright now.

just spaying the roof cos i've removed the 2 black trims,as for the speedo you should be able to just swap the worm drive's over.

got to go ready for another coat!!

From what I can gather there really isnt much difference between to two box's.

If that is the case though. Cant I just fit my 02a shifter onto a 02j box?

it's the 02J shifter you want cai,it's a lot beeter and smoother than the 02A oneall you have to do to it is swap one of the cable joints over.

Cheers Andy, If the guy on eBay would reply to my emails I would have one by now!

Been to dealers today to use there EKTA and its says that the 02J box's came with all different flanges on them. Ranging from 90mm, 100mm, 108mm and something called DD130!?!? Doesn’t seem to mater what model or year. You need the specific gearbox code for the gearbox to work out what size flanges are on it.

Basically EKTA couldn’t tell me what size flanges would be on a 99 Audi A3 1.8t sport. They could be either 90mm, 100mm or 108mm. Would be handy if I could buy one that already has correct flanges as new 100mm ones are £62 each!

Can someone else try working this out using EKTA, because I don’t trust what the parts guy at dealers was saying?

Sorted bought this one;

Spoke to guy on phone called Gareth, says already has 100mm flanges on it. Reckons its post 2000 that had 108mm flanges on.

He's going to weigh it tomorrow then it'll be on its way. Its a load off my mind finding a replacment so quickly and at a good price!! Sweet cant wait!

The mech on top of the box on yours looks different to the one on mine in the picture above, yours looks very similar to the 02A one so hopefully your original cables can be used. Think i may have to use the mk4/02J ones on mine as its a later model with 108mm flanges.

The flanges on that are different to mine again, although the shift mech looks the same but he has just cut the cables off rather than unclipping them.

Update.

Gearbox arrived today!! It weighed 42kg and cost me £33 to get next day from Woking to Anglesey, pritty good! Guy gave me £15 off eBay price to put towards postage which was nice of him. So all in it cost £167 delivered.

Had a look over it and all looks good. Have taken some pictures of shifter and flanges with camera phone so quality not too good. Think the flanges are 100mm. Am I measuring right in the picture?

Yup, flanges on yours are 100mm. Looks like your shift cables will pop straight on as well.

Thats good news! :D

I'll let you know what the ratios are like once its fitted. How much will it cost you to get VR6 1st and 2nd fitted?

I got them installed at Stealth at the same time as a full gearbox rebuild (with 250K miles on the box and a new 220+BHP engine, I'd have been stupid not to rebuild the box!)

Vince stripped the old VR box for spares and fitted the gears at the same time he rebuilt my box, so it didn't actually cost much to get them fitted... I also had an LSD installed at the same time and the whole lot came to £1200 including the VR6 box, rebuild, LSD, labour and VAT... Bloody good deal if you ask me... 8)
