Help with a diagnoses

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I hope some of you can help.

Sometimes my engine in my 2.0 8v just cuts out. It seems more prone to it if the engine has been running for a while. It also only seems to happen at slow speeds or stop/starting.

It'll all be fine and then the rev counter needle starts to judder and the battery and oil lights come on when the needle gets too low. If it gets too low altogether then the engine just cuts out (obviously). If I blip the throttle I can keep it going, but this is quite dangerous to do at traffic lights and such. I also noticed the other night that the headlights dim and flicker when it happens.

I took it to a VW dealer (Wayside, St Albans) when I had it serviced, but they couldn't find the cause. On one occasion I had to have the AA out, and he said it might be the alternator and suggested I have a systems check run.

Could there be many other causes? My dad mentioned something but I can't remember what, and I'm not too good with cars.

Any help would be appreciated, because I'm thinking of taking it back to VW. Unless anyone can suggest any good specialists.

Cheers.

Had this problem with the VR. I didn't like to, but when I started it up and had to give the engine some beans so the alternator would kick in and start charging the battery. Otherwise same symptoms after about 10 mins when the battery would start to die. Check the connection on the back of the alternator is a good one to start...

I had a similar problem on my G60, diagnosed at first as Hall Sender in the disributer, but ended up being that solders in the ECU had burnt out i.e needed a new one! supposidly caused by a dodgy alarm install. Could also be Ignition Coil..good luck

Had mine on the Vague-Com today, loads of faults argh! where do i start.

Fixed some but still need a couple of parts like the Lambda probe cos it's goosed, so was the MAF but fitted another, half of the sensors were not working!

No wonder it wouldn't hardly pill away and loads of blue smoke came out of the zorst!

Runs great now, even when cold, can't wait to get a Lambda probe and the other temp and engine speed sensors.

VW gave me my car back the other day and they couldn't find the fault despite driving it around which doesn't surprise me.

They suggested one of their technicians comes with me one day while I'm driving so he can see it (!). I can desribe the fault down to every last detail, so why they want to do this I have no idea.

It hasn't happened since though, but then I've only driven it twice since, but they said I need to keep monitoring it. Boo.
