jerky steering

Recommended Posts

this started a couple of days ago , i was driving in the rain obviously doing the speed limit 70mph (x2) on a private road

when i slowed down to 70mph or so and then when i accelerated the steering wheel would shake ?

next day it was fine , now sometimes when decelerating the steering will suddenly jerk to the left violently, everything underneath looks fine,

the engine mountings are new and ok (well the two rear are )

A friend of mine

had the exact same problem,

It turned out to be a defective

s.rack, the inner tie rod had developed

a fair amount of play thus resulting in

shaking/shimmiying of the s.wheel under

braking or accelerating.

Jack the car up and feel for play or clonking

noises, you could also try flushing out and

changing the green P.S fluid.Cheers,Andrew.

It's definately some play somewhere if it's not the tyre balance.

You can't easily tell in all cases if the bushes are gone but the steering tie rod is very easy to discover by jacking the front wheels up 1 at a time and grabbing the tyre and seeing how much left to right play there is under light joggling to and frow, other than that, don't go so fast! lol

definitely isnt a balance thing, it only happens sometimes and when it does its really violent , feels like the wheel is going to come off, it doesnt pull to the left and keep pulling ,it pulls in an on/off fashion (pulsing)

going to take a look tomorrow (if it stops bloody raining :-(

i've even thought about maybe a cv or the diff trying to seize but it would show signs elsewhere not just once every few days

oh well i'll post if i find anything

i did find another thread which is exactly the same problem but it has no replies and i cant pm the writer :-(

i thought that chris , checked them and they didnt seem particularly hot and no signs of scoring

i rang the local vw specialist (wilsons) and they suggested a front engine mount but it seems too severe for that , saving for a vibratechnics

its difficult to replicate the forces that the front suspension endures when its jacked up

thx chris
