VR6 rattle

Recommended Posts

On idle there is a rattly sound from the engine of my VR its not constant but u can hear it every 3-4 seconds or so, it sort of sounds like a bolt in a container when shaken. i dont know if its the tensioners as the car has no record of this being done and its done 95k

Is it worse when you rev the engine slightly (1200 rpm ish)? Is it coming from a particular part of the engine?

There's hundreds of posts on this very subject describing symptoms in painful detail..

you cant hear it at all when the engine is revved or when driving, only on idle ive tried to listen to see which area its coming from and just cant seem to pin point to anything, it sounds like its coming from maybe the belt area key thing though its not constant......evry 3-4 seconds

Try using a bolt (10mm) to screw down and slacken off the tensioner to the belt slowly while the engine is idling to see if the noise disappears, could be a bearing from the tensioner or waterpump and by doing this will reduce the pressure on the pulleys. Make sure you don't leave the bolt in the tensioner though!

In addition, use a long screwdriver on parts of the engine as a stethoscope to pin point the noise. It might just be a lazy lifter....
