Who knows Corrado's

Recommended Posts

Since I bought my VR6 almost 2yrs ago It's given me some pleasure and a lot of heartbreak.

I bought it with 76k on the clock with a fvwsh and it now has 85k (I drive a van all day). Honestly, I've spent about £4000 between servicing and repairs.

My dilema is, to get any major work done with the dealer costs a fortune. When I bought the car it had an oil leak somewhere. As I was so excited to have the car I took it to a local vw dealer and told him I wanted the car sorted no matter what it cost. Big mistake, they said it needed a new head gasket and some other work done and quoted me £750.

So I lied, It did matter to me how muched it cost.

To get a second opinion I took it to a local mechanic and he fixed the problem by replacing an oil cooler seal. Total cost £75 :D

So you'd think that it makes sense to use a local mechanic instead of the stealerships, Wrong.

I noticed on taking off my car would make a slight groule that I could feel through the clutch pedal. I took it to my local man to get it checked and he told me that the car needed a clutch.

I bought a new clutch and he fitted it. Called to collect the car and when I pulled out there was a slight groule that I could feel through the clutch pedal. :(

Turns out, this problem is well known to VW and is caused due to a slight variance in the transmissions gearing. It is also common on Transporter vans and the old Audi 100 cars.

Since then I've had so many stupid problems with the car and various mechanics that sometimes, I feel like having this corrado is like being in a bad marriage

Sorry for this post, the car and I are just having a bad day and I had to talk to someone :)

........took it to a local vw dealer and told him I wanted the car sorted no matter what it cost.....

 ............sorry, made me laugh.

Think it boils down to the simple fact that Corrado's cost a lot of money to maintain.

If you start thinking about selling it, either a) talk to other corrado owners who will talk you right out of it (eh Jim  ) or b) put your foot down and listen to the growl and watch as people turn their heads......or both!

Could always buy a little fiesta

Sorry if that isn't much use.

I think its just one of those things you have to accept.. I have spent a lot more on my car that I had hoped I would have too, after just one year of ownership - but for some reason I just can't bring myself to ditch it.

The Corrado is a funny thing - its a relatively cheap car to buy, and it doesn't exactly have earth shattering performance (ok, well, the VR6 is quite quick compared to most cars on the road!) but it costs a bomb to insure and run. One of the biggest gripes is one you have experienced - as they are relatively uncommon, mechanics dont have a lot of familiarity with them - and dealers are pretty anxious to get them off the road (they'd rather see you driving a shiny new Polo) so they charge a bomb for the parts. What you end up with is conflicting support from garages and dealerships - you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't!

The only way you will feel any comfort is if you find a local 'specialist' who knows what they are doing.

All I can say is, take some comfort in the knowledge that you are driving a modern day classic :)
