Would this intercooler fit my Corrado G60

Recommended Posts

No, it's not too big... 8)

You'll need a load of silicone hoses and a U bend of some description to get it to fit though... I dunno how easy it'd be to fit it though... :|

I am not to worried about the piping as i can get that sorted at a later date as long as i have a slight chance of fitting that sort of size cooler in then i know what to look for as i ve given up lookin for golf intercoolers and havent got the wad to £700 for the jabbasport kit :D

Cheers mate i will keep an eye out to see how much it goes for and maybe bid for it...... 8)

Correct me if im wrong but the golf intercooler is larger in surface area than the standard corrado one and sits infront of the rad.

Ok it has more surface area than the standard one and should in theory produce lower air temprature.

Right looking at diagrams and aerodynamics it appears that when a car is travelling then the air is pushed over the bonnet and under the bumper on a corrado the part just below the bumper plate. So would it not be as efficient to have a smaller intercooler in the path of the optimum airflow as opposed to a larger one which is not in the optimum path which is also affected by the ambient heat in the engine bay and the heat from the rad?

How could this be measured?

How could this be measured?

carefully and with lots of expensive equipment... ;)

I'm sure that VW would have done this when they designed the Golf's intercooler... don't forget that the radiator relies on airflow to cool the car's engine coolant system... there's got to be one hell of a lot of air flowing through there to keep the engine cool and that air passes through the golf intercooler BEFORE it gets to anything warm so the effects from the hot radiator and engine bay are minimal...

You've forgotten to think about that sodding big grill inbetween the headlights in your aerodynamic thinking, that and the fact that the whole front panel where the headlamps and grill are is about as aerodynamic as a brick...

A golf intercooler is probably the easiest BIG intercooler to fit as it only needs a couple of minor modifications to fit it to a Corrado, is full width, full height and well made... however just about any intercooler is going to be better than the shoebox that was fitted to the Corrado as standard... :|

I've been looking around for other intercoolers to use too recently for my new project... I'm quite liking some of the LandRover ones which are all alloy and pretty big as well as some of the ones like in your ebay link... It's rated to well over what you'll get out of a G60 engine BHP wise, so, if you think you can deal with the pipework, go for it! 8)

Then why change to a a smaller one in the corrado, i would have thought it could also be to do with the cost than efficiency unless it was to do with the fact that the I/C would cause less drag being situated behind the bumper.

The corrado wipers and headlights are a perfect example if the manufacturers had got it right than are so many corrado owners doing these mods?

Henny im not saying that there is no flow of air going through the grille, im saying that it may not be as great as the flow of air being directed down.

Majik, look behind the lower bumper grill... See the HUGE chunk of metal plate that's part of the lower subframe which attaches to the bumper/spoiler and kinda diverts the air back up to the radiator? ;)

The smaller intercooler was fitted to the Corrado so that the silencer box could be used on the outlet which would quieten down the supercharger enough for the Corrado to be a luxury coupe... Oh, and 'cos it was a shed load cheaper than the big one that they fitted to the limited numbers of Golf G60s... ;)

I've fitted an Iveco TD

Daily van intercooler to my corrado

when i had the turboed' 16valve motor,

compared to the previous Lancia delta intergrale

intercooler there was a significant pressure drop, quite

noticable.

It's not an easy swap, one has to modifiy the front

valance, move forward the radiator, shift the batt. to the

boot, cut some framework...all in all not really worth the major

hassle.

1 intercooler i tried was ok,it came off a Renault 21 turbo,

I connected it under the car with minimal fuss, the 1 itercooler that is

exellent is the sierra cossie 4x4 intercooler, but is quite difficult

to find, over here in Rome that is.

My intercooler was from a Renault 5 turbo upgrade, made a big difference to the car.

The lower section below the radiator and up to infront of the rad.

attached pic for you to see.

I would suggest bidding for this it looks to be worth it to me.

Do you know if there is much difference between the 4wd and 2wd cosworth intercoolers? as there is plenty of 2wd intercoolers on ebay! :D

Would the 50mm inlet & outlet on this custom cooler not cause a flow problem ?

The G60 alloy charger outlets are 76mm diameter & the G60 throttle body is approx 62mm diameter.

Haven't fitted it yet - just trying to get hold of some pipework.

Link to the picture's is is my sig

Cooler that I'm fitting has 60mm inlet & outlet. The core is 640mm wide & with the header tanks, it'll fit comfortably between the chassis legs.

ok if you want the easy way out of the corrado intercooler problem take a WRX intercooler and make the side bit come out 90 degrees from where it is now, friend did this to his corrado, took one from an STI cause its bigger and it worked great, IN THE STOCK PLACE, gained approx 6-8 hp and 10 ft lbs.

slight modifications to mounting brackets will need to be made, nothing a intermediate couldnt handle with a welder and a drill gun

The difference between the

4x4 and 2wd cosworth is substantial,

50% increase in in size,but there's

an even BETTER 1 than that,Get 1 off

an escort cosworth,inter/charge cooler combined...

No worries about inlet/outlet diameter,i

was pushin nearly 2 bar absolute turbo press.

with previous engine,Don't use crap intercoolers

simuler to the OE corrado 1 such as Ren. 5 turbo,

Fiat uno turbo, golf single pass rubbish, above 1,3 bar

the ends pop off.

!6 vaver golf turbo's can use the Lancia delta intergrale

intercooler because of the smaller water radiator fitted.

i dont see the point fitting massive intercoolers designed to run massive amounts of boost, when they'd be wasted on turbos/superchargers that cant handle the amount of boost eg large forge intercooler on the 306TD!.

Why not use something thats fits nicely that doesnt look out of place and can handle amount of boost required.

I ordered the cooler direct from Behr - they make the OE coolers for various manufacturers, including Mercedes.

I received a large'ish discount from the retail price - one of the 'perks' of my job....
