low mpg

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I knew I'd read something about this and have just found the article in issue 26 of the Sprinter. I haven't tried this myself yet (my thoughts in brackets), but quote the bit about instantaneous readings for you to have a go at:

1 Select neutral (no, I don't know why unless it's coz you'll need to start the engine later)

2 Swith to MFA memory mode 2

3 Turn on the ignition (not started) and hold the MFA select button (on the end of the stalk)

4 Turn off ignition, still holding the button in, then turn on again this time starting the engine

Bingo....First up you will see a four-digit number, 9020 for example. The actual number is irrelevant, it only refers to the test sum of programmed bytes. The display will again vary depending on the number of times you press the select button.

Press 1=intake vacuum manifold

Press 2=engine speed display in rpm

Press 3=memory fuel consumption

Press 4=speed sensor impulse

Press 5=oil temp in deg.C

Press 6=ambient temp in deg.C

You will now get an instantaneous reading. You can check your rev counter's accuracy, or fuel consumption, although be warned, as you accelerate the consumption may fall to single figures, (we know about that don't we) but will rise to a magical 99.9 mpg when the engine over runs. Tickover is worst at 0.3 mpg.....

....This information applies to all Corrados (so we should all be able to do this)

HTH Tell us if it didn't

Hi Jim,

When I actually get there do you know how to set the MPG reading to instantaneous or I'm I missing something?

Cheers

Well, I did this trick this morning before I set off for work, and indeed it does give later model cars a much more limited set of goodies.

I found when I did the trick and started the car it was instantly on the real time MPG stats... so at idle, was getting about 0.7MPG, and when cruising down a hill with my foot off the gas, hit up to 99MPG (as the fuel injection cuts out when on run off) - I can't vouch for what happens with the G60 as its obviously different on 2.0 16v. 2.0 8v, and VR's.

Again, once you have done the trick, should simply be a question of pressing the MFA button in to cycle through the options.. will give you a number depending on which mode you are in, which should correspond to the list I wrote originally.

HTH! :)

Doh, I feel really silly, how did I miss that Jim had already posted the mfa procedure  Sorry guys

I tried it on the '90 16v last night and it does what it says on the tin. Can't see what the differences on VR might be yet coz I've got dash in kit form at the moment

Hi Guys

I tried this on the way home from work. And although I got higher than 22mpg I still didn't get much more than 27 mpg no 99 on there with foot off the accelerator going down hill? How does the fuel cut off work. i.e. I have been told that when you are cruising in gear with your foot off the accelerator that you don't actually burn off any fuel because it cuts it off hence the 99 mpg. Could it be that mines is not working?

Also I idle at between 815 and 825 is this right anyone with a standard G60 out there. It seems a little high but I don't know very much about this stuff.

.

Thanks for your help!! :D

There are two micro switches on top of the throttle body. When the throttle is at rest, a little stop on the cable will hit the first micro switch, which tells the ECU to kill the fuel.

The second micro switch is the fuel enrichment. This is activated when you hit full throttle.
