surfer.vr6 0 Posted June 27, 2005 after believing vw had bomb proof gearboxs just found out today that my diff bearing and may be mainshaft bearings are shot the noise this has caused is a rotational grating noise heard at about 35-40 mph had hoped it was a cv joint gone so out with the gearbox again only a month after having the timing chains replaced along with the clutch
Geo 0 Posted June 27, 2005 Here's what the diff in my Vento VR6 gearbox looked like after a recent track day. I hadn't expected to get quite as good a view of it but that's how it goes I suppose......

Geo 0 Posted June 27, 2005 No sh1t! Yeah that box is finished. A few people have since told me that the diffs are a weak point on VR6 boxes subjected to hard use.
surfer.vr6 0 Posted June 27, 2005 can you get the diff seperate from the gearbox?
Geo 0 Posted June 27, 2005 Yeah you can change the diff internals as long as the casing is ok.
Joe M 0 Posted June 27, 2005 The diff itself isnt the problem afaik, its the rivets that hold the final drive gear onto the diff. It would be worth having them drilled out and replaced with an arp bolt kit while the box is apart.
