GPS software

Recommended Posts

Right, before everyone says "tom-tom" or "buy a PDA", read my question below carefully, 'cos I'll delete any answers like that!

I've bought myself a little laptop for use in my car (it's about the size of a video cassette!) and I want to link it to my GPS tracker to have in car sat-nav... It's a full on Windows PC with 40GB HDD etc so Tom-tom won't run on it (as far as I understand)

What I want is some software which will do the whole postcode to postcode sat-nav thing as well as showing me my real speed on the screen... However, what I also want is the ability to record what I'm doing around a track via GPS... speed, direction, laptimes etc... so I can work out where I'm going wrong and where I need to improve... 8)

Anyone got any experience or knowledge of any software that would do this? :?

according to Amazon's reviews "while it is a very good mapping product, the maps themselves are woefully out of date."

Any more suggestions?

can windows mobile not be installed on the mini PC??

what if you can do an install of PPC on a SD card and run a dual boot from it. I have read several articles on how to strip out windows (not mobile though) and run from removable disk.

Then you could stick Tom Tom on and jobs a good un! whilst keeping windows on the PC for watever you fancy

Lippy

P.S. The above may not be possible however it sounds feasible which usually gets me most of the way there!

I think you'll find that unless you can find some specialist software, no software I'm aware of is gonna cut it so far as TRACK use goes, as they all rely on "road" maps, and none (that I'm aware of) have tracks listed on roads, so they'll take your position as being the nearest road.

Also, GPS isn't really accurate enough for track data anyway.
