VR6 TDC

Recommended Posts

Had a few days off this week so I decided to tackle a few big jobs on my VR, change the Auto to a Manual gearbox, do the lower timing chain tensioner at the same time (did the upper last year) and hopefully cure an annoying oil leak that I’ve been meaning to do for ages.

But I need some clarification on TDC for the VR engine. I always assumed TDC was No 1 cylinder at its highest position prior to ignition.

I’ve set the timing to TDC, with the crankshaft pulley notch lined up with mark on the block, the intermediate sprocket gear notch visible and the camshafts in the correct position (more ½ circle below the groove than above).

In this position the lob on the inlet camshaft for No 1 cylinder pushes down on the hydraulic tappet and therefore opens the inlet valve. If this is the case the piston should not be at the top of its stroke, which is what I’ve got. So is the correct position for TDC on No 1 piston less than full travel.
