Neil VR6 0 Posted August 5, 2005 The gearbox in my G60 is getting on a bit now (116K miles) and will need something doing to it in the meduim term future. What have other people done in this situation? As far as I can see I can do any number of things: a) Source a second hand recon unit b) Have mine rebuilt by a gearbox specialist c) Keep mine in and source a cheap 2nd hand one and have that rebuilt thus cutting the off-road time for my car, then sell my old one as a project. What have other people done? Also, if the cost isn’t prohibitive could I make the ratios less ridiculous? 1st to 3rd are so short, too short for an engine which is quite torquey and could push wider spaced gears. Also I know that an ATB LSD would be ace but I think that’s a little out of financial reach. All ideas entertained!
Supercharged 2 Posted August 5, 2005 Stealth charge £550+vat for a standard rebuild + price of a clutch job if you take car to them...
Dr Forinor 0 Posted August 5, 2005 Ok, havent a clue in this kinda stuff, but I take it a rebuild is a lot cheaper than just new parts? Why not get a new gearbox? Or is that just a stupid question?
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 5, 2005 New gearbox from VW is over £1K.... the gears themselves are £100 each, the diff crownwheel is £120, so that's £620+VAT straight away - in parts.... plus all the bearings, synchros, shafts, etc etc.... Vince's rebuilds are not just a rebuild though, somehow they're slicker and the gearshift improves too.....

Chris VR6nos 0 Posted August 5, 2005 I sometimes get a little worried that soon people will want to start having sex with Vince for one reason or another  Chris
Supercharged 2 Posted August 5, 2005 New Boxes are more like 2k Kev...
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 5, 2005 2 grand...flippin eck. Vortech, LOL... shall I book you in then? But come on mate, you're better than underhand remarks like that. I don't know why you're so anti people wanting to take their car to Stealth. The man's good at what he does and deserves recognition for it. Not everyone can or is in a position to fix things themselves and/or get stuff on the cheap like you can
Neil VR6 0 Posted August 5, 2005 It certainly sounds like a good price to me. So all in assuming you take the car in and then drive it back out with a new clutch (and inner CV's in my case) you're probably looking at a grand?
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 5, 2005 As an idea, my Rebuild + VAG clutch + 3.68 final drive + Quaife ATB + labour + VAT = £1300.
Neil VR6 0 Posted August 5, 2005 That's very cheap!!! I wanted to change the ratios on mine too. Was that drive in one day and drive out another? Ie Did you have to just give them the gearbox?
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 5, 2005 That included a change of every single synchro aswell (Vince normally just replaces any that are noticably worn, 2nd only usually) but I'm fussy and wanted them all doing regardless  Vince didn't have any spare VR6 gearboxes so he had to take mine off, rebuild it and refit it in the same day. After watching him do it, it's a lot of work for a 7 hour day and he was non stop at it pretty much. He did say to me he wouldn't normally do a box build in a day (unless building a spare in advance) so you'd need to chat to him about it. As for the ratios, it's a good time to do those, as is fitting an ATB.....
Blue_Joe 0 Posted August 5, 2005 If you want to change the ratios do what I did! 1st and 2nd (plus the opposing gears) and reverse out of a VR6 put into the G60 box. Much better setup than a G60 box!!! Cost me £50 for a VR6 gearbox that had blown the diff pin through the casing but the gears inside were like brand new!!! Then the cost of a rebuild putting the relevant VR6 gears into my box! And as good as Vince apparently is, I didn't use him. Just make sure you get a reputable rebuilder!!! Neil VR6 0 Posted August 5, 2005 Gulp, better start saving. Car's already cost nearly £700 this week. Oh well it "feels" like a good price considering what it is involved both in terms of parts and labour. I think it's at least 6 months off though. Bread and water from now on.
