ClassicStorm 0 Posted July 28, 2003 Guys, I own a VR6 and experience the whine of a wife everytime I get in my car, from the Alternator I think.Should I recon the current one or uprate to a bigger and better one?I'm not sure what is on the market,I do have a nearly brand new VW battery and an ICE system in the car too.Any suggestions as to best plan of attack..... Scott 0 Posted July 28, 2003 You sure its the alternator? Could be the belt tensioner?
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 28, 2003 Scott's right, could be the tensioner. Wind a long 8mm bolt (13mm head) into the hole on top of the tensioner until the belt is completely slack. Now grab the tensioner pulley and wiggle it about and spin it etc. It should spin freely with a very slight amount of lateral play. If it's seized solid or very stiff to turn, replace it. The VR6 uses a 90 amp alternator and I don't think there are many a lot bigger than that, other than specialist ICE ones or DAF truck jobs! Kev
ClassicStorm 0 Posted July 29, 2003 I'm pretty sure that its the Alternator and can hear the noise from that vicinty when the engine is on?The noise gets slightly louder under slight acceleration......thanks for the advice about the tensioner though guys.I suppose that this is a common VR6 problem then? What cost am I looking at if you are right and I need to replace the tensioner? Cheers for the help P.S. My VW specialist mechanic did recommend a bigger Alternator,ot sure what one though, and diagnosed the problem for me!
Rams 0 Posted July 29, 2003 Its around £68 or there abouts. I replaced mine 1 month ago due to the noise it made when spinning around on the belts. Its well worth doing. That price was a dealer price and if you're a member of the CCGB you get 10 % off the dealers.
