Rattle on start up getting worse - belt/chain?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Got a rattle on my 2L 16v on startup which is getting progressivley worse.

I am told it's the cam belt/timing chain.

Is this a job I can do, or is it best left to a specialist? How much should I expect to pay for the work? Any good ppl round the west midlands?

I am also told it could be the oil feeder pipe from the sump to the tappets getting clogged, or my oil pump. Oil pressure is down and I keep getting a beeping with the oil light that goes when I rev the engine...? (I have seen the posts on this subject and will be changing the oil pump and filter asap just to be safe)

sounds like they werent sure what was wrong.....best drop the sump and inspect things,if its filthy in there a good clean out of the pick up tube will improve things...if its had a hard life then a new oil pump would be a good idea

the cam belt and chain are cheep..and fiarly striaght forward if your handy at diy

Sounds like an oil pressure problem - low oil pressure on startup will cause your tappets to rattle. I agree with Scott, you need to find the root of the problem or you may end up wasting a load of cash.

Wise word of warning - don't drive the car until it's sorted. The problem you describe could, ultimately, cause your engine to seize !!
