A5 VRX 0 Posted October 20, 2005 Alright Peeps, just wondered if you could help? My 2.0 16v really loves pulling to the left, more so at low speeds than high but still v noticable either way. Had my tracking done (seemed to notice it after it had been done really), tyre pressures are spot on so dont know what it is! the brakes have a squeel on them but not always so could it be brakes be binding? Any help much appriciated, cheers
james_88 0 Posted October 20, 2005 As you mentioned it could be a sticking calliper or possibly worn suspension top mounts, i had this problem and got the mounts replaced and it made a difference!
werkes 0 Posted October 21, 2005 pulling to the left/right is normally: 1. tyre pressures 2. tracking/camber adj out 3. tyre rotation incorrect 4. pressures I would say that a binding caliper might add to the sensation of pulling, but not always true. Best bet is to put on a brake roller (at a MOT garage for example) and run up the front axle. This will show if brakes are binding or not. As for steering geometry, get it done by a professional. I get loads of cars 'done' by tyre fit companies and most are wrong!! Also - dont forget the camber of the road. This can also dictate the 'feel' of the steering wheel. Any doubts/questions, feel free to PM me! Regards Reuben 0208 681 0208 http://www.tuningwerkes.com
A5 VRX 0 Posted October 21, 2005 cheers guys, car has had new top mounts etc with the suspension which was fitted not long back so must have to be steering geometry or camber. are these expensive to put right or is it a case of simple ajustment? steve_16v 0 Posted October 21, 2005 If it's had non-standard suspension put on then it will definately need the camber/castor/tracking setting up, this usually costs £70-100. I had a similar problem with mine pulling right (see a couple of threads down) and it turned out the track-rod ends and anti-roll bar bushes were fecked and the camber, castor and tracking were all miles out. It was only fixed yesterday though so it's hard to say for sure if it's all sorted now, I'll be taking it back next week to make sure it's still all where it should be. A5 VRX 0 Posted October 23, 2005 Just read your thread, dont know how i didn't see it before! Going to get the car to the local v-dub specialist this week and try and find out whats going off, as you said it's just not fun driving it when it's like this, cheers for the help
dutch 0 Posted October 24, 2005 i've got the same problem at the moment...aligment is fine (done sometime ago though)..tire presuure is fine. but i do notice that the FR wheel seems to be cambered in a little. I'll be doing the ball joints in the next couple of days...hopefully should help.
dutch 0 Posted October 25, 2005 problem solved! replaced both ball joints last night and vola!! no more pulling to the left!
A5 VRX 0 Posted October 25, 2005 Going to get the camber checked but if it cant be sorted then i'll be thinking new ball joints to see if that helps as it's really doing my head in, just want to get it sorted. How much did it cost you, did you just do the one side?
steve_16v 0 Posted October 25, 2005 You're best off replacing them both mate, I replaced only one on another car of mine and the other one broke a few months later when I was pulling into work ... wasn't a pleasant experience, the arch slams right down onto the wheel, you have no control at all and it's a royal pain in the ass to get it on a tow truck! When mine were replaced the ball-joints, steering arms and bushes were all part of one unit, cost about £60 the pair and it takes less than an hour to swap them over if it all goes well. Tekara 0 Posted October 25, 2005 To slightly highjack the thread, i had a fair bit of trouble getting the alignment right. Seems everytime i get it done within a week or so it begins to return to its old tricks of pulling to the left. Any reason why it does this ? Im a bit lost as to which part to replace next. dutch 0 Posted October 25, 2005 blackvalver...always replace both ball joints together at the same time, no sense in having one new side. every mechanic i took the vr to said i was wasting my money..the ball joints were fine...always bear in mind a cars suspension behaves different with load on it then when it's on a rack...since my camber was off..i knew it could only be a couple of things...and ball joints tend to be the first thing to go..i payed about 80 for parts and labour.. tekara...maybe tire pressure? u might be losing air.....??
