reccomended spark plugs/ pinking

Recommended Posts

Just get what the dealer sells - sorry no part number off hand...

I doubt it will cure the pinking tho, you need to check the ignition timing then look at the engine/ecu sensors...

I'd put a strobe light on and check your ignition timing first. Assuming that is correct and it still pinks, check the condition and connections of the knock sensors. There are two on a 9A, both bolted to the front of the block. Do a search and you should find plenty of info including photos of them. The 2.0 16v should not pink if set up correctly.

Knock sensors are a bit of a difficult thing to check - they may not give a fault on the diagnostics, but could still be the cause of your problem. Make sure that they are bolted up to exactly the correct torque (15lbf. ft) and that the mating surfaces between it (them) and the block are clean.

By the way, what grade of fuel are you using?

If your cylinder head or piston crowns have carbon deposits, this may also give rise to pinking - the only real cure for that is to take the head off and scrape the deposits off.

Plug grade is important too. Look on http://www.sparkplugs.co.uk for the correct application; they do an excellent mail-order service and are good value.

Finally, could your distributor be playing up and not be giving correct timing over the whole rev range.

Best wishes

It may be as simple as an air leak after the airflow/fuelling meter head.

Check all the air pipes and breathers connected between the meter head and the throttle body for loose joints or splits, even the small side jointed rubber hoses. Cjeck the throttle body ain't leaking where bolts onto the inlet manifold.

If air is getting in, it lessen the fuel delivery due the the air flow plate not rising as much as it should and with the air getting in else where, a weaker mixture results which can lead to pinking.

9A uses 95RON by auto adjustments. 98RON is not necessary.
