HELP! Glowing Brake Disc...

Hi Guys, just got home from driving my brother and GF home (1.5 mile drive!) and when I arrived at the house my rear left brake disc was so hot it was GLOWING red! I checked for friction but couldn't see any occurring, I rolled the car along to see if the calliper was locked up and it was fine (as far as I could see)....

 

Any ideas would be a great help, thanks alot!

 

P.S I'm not new to the forum but just haven't been on in a while :?

Did you have your handbrake down all the way?

check for binding caliper with the car running as the servo will apply some pressure

It does sound like the caliper is locking up and needs its pistons loooobing. :?

The rear brake callipers are notorious for ceasing - it might have ceased on and then you've worn away the pad that was rubbing by the time you got home.

 

Personal preference would be to go for some Mk4 callipers as they're a better design and are made of alloy, so are less likely to corrode up.

It's possible to put MK4 callipers on the rear, straight swap or needs modification?

Straight swap, but you'll need some adapter hoses because they use different connectors to the standard Corrado items.

 

You can use the Corrado pads if you want, but late (93 on I think) Mk3 GTI pads work best.
