does wheel width have much effect handling/ traction??

i'm about to buy new wheels for my corrado, i'm currently running 17x8in wheels and the ones i want to get only come in 17x7in. i intend to continue using 205/40/17 tyres so will the footprint on the road remain the same??

the footprint width difference will be negliable as it`s the mounting lip that will be altered, i doubt that you will notice much of a difference
