chrisw 0 Posted February 11, 2006 Hi, I've been trying to trace knocking noises (like everyone) and have noticed there seems to be a lot a play in the inner cv joints. If I grasp the driveshaft by the inners, it can be moved up and down about 1mm or so. Is this normal or is it time for new joints?
CorradoVR6-Turbo 0 Posted February 11, 2006 The only real way to check CV joint is drive the car on full lock in the yard, you will hear it knock on which ever side is worn
dr_mat 0 Posted February 12, 2006 Can't test the inner CV joints like that .. but it'll give the outer ones a good workout. Don't know the answer myself though, no idea if any play is "normal"..
CorradoVR6-Turbo 0 Posted February 12, 2006 oops ... sorry should have read it more clearly. All joints are not 100% free from play and the inner joints never fail unless your run silly horsepower?
chrisw 0 Posted February 12, 2006 The outer ones are rock solid but there is obvious movement on the inners. No particular knocking on hard acceleration though.
dr_mat 0 Posted February 13, 2006 The car lowered? The only time I've heard of people chewing inner joints was cos of silly power or silly lowering .. (Or both!)
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted February 13, 2006 . If I grasp the driveshaft by the inners, it can be moved up and down about 1mm or so. Is this normal or is it time for new joints? Yeah mine are like that, been meaning to do them for ages. They grumble in the morning when reversing off the drive and the shaft movement causes a vibration through the column and pedal box under hard acceleration and braking. I know it's not the brakes causing that as they've just been changed and were checked for run out.
dr_mat 0 Posted February 13, 2006 Ah, cue those comments about "silly power" then .. :)
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted February 13, 2006 LOL, they were like that before the charger mate, but it's just one of those things that's been on the to-do list for yonks! I'm waiting for the lovely cracking/crunching noise first.... might aswell get my money's worth out of them :-)
