automan3 0 Posted March 10, 2006 After reading dozens of posts on the subject of VR6 Autobox malfunctions, I finally booked my C into a 'respected' Auto transmission specialist as it was intermittently sticking in 3rd gear. Their synopsis after clearing the fault codes was that the oil needed topping-up (they put 1.5-2l in) although I had checked it less that 2 weeks previously and it was bang-on. And that 4th gear was 'gone' - the quote for a re-build => £1,400+VAT!! It doesn't end there......1 mile down the road I smelled burning oil and assumed they had spilt some ATF on the engine. As I only live 2.5 miles from the garage I kept heading for home, by which time the car looked like it was on fire. Once I stopped outside my house all drive was gone and it looked as though someone had dumped a bucket of oil on the box - it was pi**ing out everywhere. I checked the oil level and it was about a third full - the rest was on the street. I called the garage and put it to them that they had overfilled the box as the level was fine before I took it to them; they said I hadn't checked it properly and that the engine had to be running and box in P. Credit to them they came out to look at it and said the bell housing gasket had gone, but it was just a coincidence that it happened after they had checked it. I'm sure the autobox only takes 3l, and that I've been checking it correctly for the last 2.5 years since I bought it and had all the fluids/filters/etc changed. I didn't get an owner's manual with the car. Can anyone help......I'm lost and hope this isn't the end of my C. Cheers.

lottysvdub 0 Posted March 12, 2006 your right my owners manual states Automatic gearbox (ATF) approx 3.0 litres , thats a real shame whats happend :( , did you not have any signs of a leak before you took the car to the garage cos if it was spot on before you took it there and they put 1.5 ltrs on top of what was already in it that would be more than enough to damage the gear box seals under pressure , sounds like another monkey working in a dodgy garage to me and a convenient cover up buy the garage after the seal failure :censored: hope it works out for you buddy :thumbleft:
automan3 0 Posted March 13, 2006 I did the N/S drive shaft seal on the box about 2 weeks earlier and the level was spot-on, there were no signs of any leaks and the seal was still fine after the fluid loss. I'm gutted as this is the place in Glasgow where most transmission specialists send their autoboxes for repair. I've got a few contacts for places to try from my brother who's into Audi's Anyone heard of http://www.testransmissions.co.uk or http://www.gearchange.co.uk? as I'm gonna try them. andyvlw 0 Posted March 16, 2006 I have a 94 VR6 auto box (no torque converter) with 80000 miles, which you can have if you want to sort out the postage. I did a manual conversion about 8 months ago and no longer have any need of it. The box was working fine before I changed it.
automan3 0 Posted March 16, 2006 Sounds great, how much do you want for it? My '92 box has the manual sport switch, did your '94 box have that or the later type, i.e. changing depending on driving style - or do you know if it it's still the same box with a different ECU? I'm assuming you'll know as you seem to have a few posts on most of the VR6 autoboxes threads I've read. Cheers, Brett

andyvlw 0 Posted March 17, 2006 It’s the later type without the switch, and I do still have the ECU, as regards being 100% compatible I’m not 100% sure. I don’t want anything for the box, as I need it out of the way, so its yours for just postage, which I don’t expect to be cheap as its quite heavy. automan3 0 Posted March 18, 2006 Very kind of you! - I'm in Glasgow, so I'll try and sort out delivery; I'm sure I'll be able to get it sent up using a pallet courier. I'll look into it and get back to you ASAP. Thanks again for the offer!!!!!! Brett
