Can I use carb cleaner to clean callipers?

Recommended Posts

I have bought some used callipers / carriers to upgrade my brakes to 288mm.

I want to give them a clean and paint them them before fitting.

Is carb cleaner OK to use on the callipers or could it eat the rubber for the pistons ??????

Interesting choice of cleaning product, but it should be fine. Personally, I'd remove the pistons and the seals and clean them with a proper brake cleaner fluid before paining them.

The reason I asked is because I already have some carb cleaner.

I haven't got any brake cleaner.

If it does the same job, it saves me making the trek to halfords.....

same stuff.

Not quite - brake cleaner is said to be more abrasive, thats why you shouldn't clean a carb or fuel injection system with it but the other way round would be ok...

If it was the same stuff they'd probably sell it in the same can and call it the same thing! Petrol and diesel? Same stuff mate - distilled from crude oil...makes cars go!
