diggerbucket 0 Posted April 13, 2006 I've just bought a lovely VR6 at the weekend but it had a couple of problems on the way home. I was driving at about 70 and had to pull over when the dash lights all went dim and the water light started flashing. The water temp briefly reached 110, oil temp about 100. I then discovered the aux belt tensioner had broken, and the coolant system had boiled over - steam everywhere and coolant pissing out. I have also since discovered that the electric water pump is leaking. Now the questions - there was no sign of the water light coming on until seconds before i pulled over, so surely the level can't have dropped that much and caused it to overheat? If I take off the bottom radiator hose should this drain the system? Because it's just trickling out pretty slowly..... I've used a hose to put some pressure into the top rad hose and it's not going anywhere fast. Is this just cause the thermostat is closed?
dr_mat 0 Posted April 14, 2006 Voltage drop. Aux belt went dead, alternator went dead, water pump stopped turning. Dashboard goes bonkers, all sensor information on the dash is irrelevant there. So - fix the aux belt, charge the battery, top up the coolant and see if it's still leaking. Sounds like you could do with a replacement aux water pump too. Not uncommon at this age.
