3.30:1 pinion and gear swap into a corrado

Recommended Posts

so I have a passat transmission in my C right now, 3.94:1 final drive.

I am putting my supercharger (big one) back into the car as I took it out finished but never ran it.

Ive got 2 spare transmissions (1 lost 2nd gear teeth, 1 blew its diff) sitting around both US C transmissions, 3.65:1 gearing, what I want is to be on the freeway at 75mph @ 2600 rpms, so I want the 3.3:1 yes I know I may be slower off the line and all that but I also want the ability of over 160 mph, speed contests around here constantly involve Corvettes and Vipers on the freeway, they have long gearing, I dont so when I get to 140 I top out.

yes yes I know racings bad but I cant help myself =-)

anyway wondering if I can take a passat VR6 transmission and take the gears from it and throw them into a G60, also want its gear and pinion because its 3.3:1

just need to know if this is possible to do.

Yeah you can use the VR6 crown wheel and pinion in your G60 box.

Be careful with the diff bearing preloads, you should only just be able to turn the input shaft by hand when it's set correctly. If you can't move it at all or if it's too easy to turn, it's not set correctly. You might be OK if you reuse the G60 shims.

The 3.39 crown wheel with a 0.84 5th will give you 172mph at 7000rpm.

Has your engine got enough guts to pull that though?

when I plug in the ECU and intercooler line coming from the AMG supercharger it will. ;)

It had enough guts to get to 140 easily with my G-lader, little too much for the G-lader tho.

using a .79 5th gear, possibly a .71

what about this differential preload thing? is it outlined in the bentley? and where is it?

Im gonna do a transmission day soon so I need to know I guess, oh and kev since I think you did your transmission, what parts do I need for a reassembly of a transmission, Im buying new synchro gears and oil seals so far.

Yeah, bit of a post count eh? LOL!

Yeah the preloads are in the Bentley I think, can be quite a lengthy and tedious procedure if you have to shim the diff bearings.

I didn't do my gearbox, a VW specialist did it and I just watched and asked loads of questions ;-) He's been doing them for about 20 years and made it look like piecing together Lego!

Seals, input shaft and diff bearings are the usual suspects. Bearings, input and output shaft, layshaft and diff.

I also did all of the synchros, which isn't cheap as 2nd gear synchro is made up of 3 parts. The others are one peice but the whole lot is about £150! Generally speaking only 1st to second rings need doing, unless any of the other gears are reluctant to engage? Worth doing it all whilst it's in bits and it makes the box feel new again.
