dick dasterdley 0 Posted August 14, 2006 Hi, I'm new to this forum, having just bought a '90 16 valve corrado. I'm loving the car, but think the clutch release bearing is on the way out- theres a high pitched rattle/whine that stops when i push the clutch in. Anyway, my question is Can you replace the release bearing on its own- I've been told by a mechanic ( not my usual VW specialist as he sadly died- :( ) that the whole clutch has to be replaced.... Is this true, or is he trying it on?
bighands 0 Posted August 14, 2006 Think it is possible to buy, and replace them alone but hardly seems worth leaving out the clutch for another half hours work, and if the bearing has gone then the clutch must be nearing then end of its life anyway i would of thought, so to save removing the gearbox again in maybe not as long as you think, whip a clutch in fella!!! They come in a clutch kit anyway, around 100 quid if i remember right from VW and apparently best place to get it from, for quality not price!! Supercharged 2 Posted August 14, 2006 Yeah - does sound like the release bearing - also could be running off centre on the shaft it sits on - both parts don't cost much, maybe £30 but with the labour involved you are best to change the whole clutch unless you know it's fairly new. If you need a release bearing I have a G60 one (VW part boxed - would have to check it's the same on yours) in the garage that i bought when I was getting the same after a new clutch was fitted but the noise went away - I assume the grease just worked its way in...
