VR6 engine bebuild!

Recommended Posts

I'm considering buying a 4 owner VR6 with 108k with full and exstensive history, was originally trying to find a lower mileage example. I know these cars tend to require head rebuilds, timing chains and (gulp!) full reuilds at higher mileages but what are the warning signs?

Would also be great if you could give me some idea of cost for this work, and if there's any other work that should maybe be done at the same time?

Cheers

Try the search dude.....

vr6 AND rebuild etc

Maybe the buyers guide also?

But for starters..... smoke on over-run, oil useage, oiled-up plugs, etc

For the bottom end youre looking over £2k!!! If its just the head etc then should be a fair bit less than that. You could always add some extra valves ;)

I had my bottom end rebuilt (Inc crank, chains, tens, conrods etc etc_) for £1400. That was done by a VW Specialist in Southampton.

The firm who do most of the VR6 engines for VW racers are very close to Bristol. A rebuilt bottom end with ported and polished head is likely to cost over £2k though.

Mike, I'd have to point out that Grant Motorsport are in serious financial trouble according to talk on other forums - I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole especially after the TSR fiascos...

Cheers guys, also did a bit of ringing around today - looks like £750 + VAT for a head rebuild, £1,450 incl VAT to get chains, tensioner and clutch done aswell at a certain well known specialist near Oxford.

So big money basically but the car I'm looking at has a perfect history (every receipt from new), stamped service book and has had thousands spent on it. Heater leather recaro interior and very straight exterior, price is £4k so even with the work its cheaper than a lower mileage car (70-80k). And there's not really any reason to think it needs any work anyway.

That price sound about right?

If anyone fancies checking the car out for me then it be very much appreciated......!

not autotechnik?

Thats them! I found them very helpful with a wealth of Knowledge. Far more knowledgable than any VW dealers around here. There is also a place in Chandlers Ford that seem to know their stuff as well.
