Ad2408 0 Posted September 17, 2006 Hi Hope someone can help, the girlfriends 1989 valver has suddenly forgotten to how to idle. Wouldn't start first off (had to use a little bit of gas) then ran but idle is really low (around the 500 rpm mark) As you can imagine the engine is bucking all over the place at that low RPM! We went on a decent journey yesterday (around 50 miles) and it was flawless, started on the button each time. I actually commented on it! (Maybe i've jinxed it  ) Any ideas whats caused it? And more importantly how to fix it? Thanks in advance Adam
Riley 0 Posted September 17, 2006 Hi m8, On the right hand side of the cylinder head there are 3 (iirc) senders with single spade terminals. Just swap them around, and see if the problem goes away. It dosn't matter which way they go as they are all the same part number. (in fact the above is only worth trying if it wont idle at all) If that shows no impovement it sounds like the isv (idle stabilisation valve) has stopped working. Its a cylinder shaped thing that should be buzzing just with the ignition on. Neil. :)
Supercharged 2 Posted September 17, 2006 Could also be a vac (air) leak...
.A.N.T. 0 Posted September 18, 2006 I think you can clean out the ISV which might help... Do a search here, and on the club gti website (http://www.clubgti.com)
chocolatedip 0 Posted September 19, 2006 my car stopped idling on saturday, it just kept cutting out when i took my foot off the accelerator pedal. so, i've just cleaned the 3 senders with single spade terminals on the right of the engine as suggested by Riley, and it worked 100%. so thanks mate you've indirectly saved me a lot of stress.
