Got a slight problem

Hi guys just wondering if you can help me with a problem on my '94 VR6.

 

Its making a kind of rumbling noise (similar to a landrovers knobbly tyres on tarmac) which is present when going straight or turning left, but goes away when turning right.

 

I originally thought CV joints but the old carpark and circles trick doesn't seem have any knocking noises... plus its doing it in a straight line when the pressure is off.

So wheel bearings? .. well they got through the MOT last month ok

New front tyres coming tomorrow so that should eliminate that.

 

So any other ideas?

I would be tempted to have a closer look at your CV joint/boot. I used to have a similar problem when the CV boot was loose... granted it was on a clio though! Other than that I would be tempted to agree with you that it is most likely bearings.

That'll be a wheel bearing on the off-side then. It doesn't necessarily need to exhibit play to cause a rumble.

Got it jacked up this afternoon, cv's look ok and the wheels don't appear to have much play in the bearings. But i'm no mechanic and I think bcstudent is right that the hot favourite is it's most likely the bearing.

There needs to be only a very tiny amount of play to get the rumbling sound. You're best off to jack it up and spin the wheel, but that's not an infallible method.

Right well went a long to my garage of choice, DG Motors in wellingborough, and had it confirmed. Needs new drivers side wheel bearing and hub.

 

Its going in a week on monday so just in time for christmas.
