bighands 0 Posted December 15, 2006 Hopefully just a quick one, but fitted a second hand low millage gearbox when i did the engine swap, and all seemed fine the first few test drives, but last night 3rd was whining like a bitch, like someone had fitted a supercharger overnight, but i checked and no such luck LOL! Have to say i took it for granted there was oil in it and havent checked yet, but anything else that will cause noisy boxes? Andy
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted December 15, 2006 Unusual that just one gear whines, it's usually the diff that wears and certain rpms give you the whine. It's more noticable at urban speeds because of the lower road and wind noises. if it is the gear itself, not cheap as they're expensive from VW. Layshaft, input, output and diff bearings can all contribute to the noise levels, aswell as a lack of oil.
