6 branch worth it??

Recommended Posts

Up at santa pod at the weekend and could not get quicker than 15.9 with terminal speed of 91 mph. bit gay. thinking bout gettin manifold and de cat pipe and cams. heard that the 6 branch won't give any more power, and then heard that it will. what do you reckon??

May give a little more but not much. Fair bit lighter though. The VR's gearing is not suited to the 1/4 mile. 3.68 final drive will help.

Agreed. Gearing is one way to improve times.

A well designed and lagged 6 branch can show improvements in midrange torque though and VRs seem to respond well to decatting also.

Quality eatthis! think i'm just gonna try and tune when funds allow. think that cams are first as head gask needs replacing at some point soon, then decat and manifold and need to sort a better cold air feed to the filter, but i'm not sure where best to locathe the tubing to the filter?? also my cam pos sensor is randomly faulty. vince said it will feel like losing 30 bhp, so i'm gonna blame that for the poddage runs!!!???!!!

Sorry to jump on this but mine is vagely related so here goes...

My bro' is scrapping his 1989 mk2 G 16v and he has a custom 4 branch exhaust manifold, I'm sure he bolted it straight in to his original system so whats the chance of it fitting mine and is it worth it??

As you can see from my sig I've got a 1990 valver, To my delight it's 0-60 time is down from a standard 8.9 to a self timed but consistant 7.5 all from the following mods..

50mm inlet

Drilled airbox (boy racer I know but sounds funky)

Miltek full system

Ecotek valve

k&n panel

For that time I reckon it's gotta have around 150bhp which is impressive given 117k on the clock.

So boys and girls...Shall I bother chucking it on or not?

To be honest apart from the stupid noise it makes when returning to idle it has made a fair bit of difference.

Just makes the car feel a touch newer and smoother, little more eager and pull's a fraction harder. Haven't seen any great fuel savings yet though.

I'd genuinely recommend them and for £35 good as new with the piper-x filter from ebay it would've been rude not to.

sorry for the hi-jack but is it worth fittin 268's with the standard manifold?

Yes you can fit 268's with standard manifold.

I have a stainless 6 branch fitted to my golf vr6 and it made virtually no power increase whatsoever - I had a before and after rolling road session. No bhp increase at all, if anything a few more lbs/ft torque. Then I started developing a small blow less than 6 months later (and I have uprated engine mounts proper flexi joints the lot still made no difference and mine is a good quality one supposedly). Not worth the hassle in my eyes mate. Spend your money on more efficient mods - definitely go for a decat or high flow cat and get the cams, full exhaust and air filter. My 268 cams gave a good increase - about 10-15bhp. You must get a custom remap though after fitting the cams otherwise you will say goodbye to your engine. The remap is vital to get the altered fuelling spot on. I got some second hand Eurospec cams - which use the same profile as Shrick cams. I was told not to go for any other make as you will lose low down power - whereas with Eurospec and Shrick cams you lose hardly any low down power at all.

I have also heard a slightly different "final drive" ratio gear cog can be fitted but was told this was very expensive and advised my local vr6 specialist not to go for it - I mean you're looking at £1k-£2k as you need to get a quaif or peloquin diff fitted at same time.

yes

when a added a 6 branch with 268 cams and got it remapped i gained 25 bhp at the wheels and 30 lb ft at the wheels! my figures went up to 178 bhp and 175 lb ft at the wheels

Fitting one item at a time will see little to no BHP increase at all but do them with other mods you will see a difference.

Any help to make the VR go faster cheaply is going to be tough!

Sorry to open this one back up but I'm still none the wiser if a mk2 16v has the same exhaust manifold/downpipe as my little yellow bundle of love. Any idea's?

Also whist I'm on here is there much difference in performance between the 2.0ltr and the 1.8 valvers? I kinda fancied something a little newer then mine but quicker and still with alright mpg and insurance.
