removing piston from caliper to replace seal??

hi i`ve got some G60 calipers to go on my 16v, but one of the seals is damaged, they were working fine when removed from the car.

 

question is how do i get the piston out of the caliper? i`ve already got the seal kit

 

haynes says use a foot pump to force it out, tried that but couldnt get a seal

to push enough air in to make the caliper move

Bentley manual says the same , use air pressure to push the piston out with a piece of wood placed in the caliper to stop it damaging the piston

the caliper still has half a hose on so maybe a football or lilo attachment might work in there??

try filling the caliper up with some engine oil first, it will slow down the leak past the seal but make sure you do it somewhere that your not going to spray oil everywhere.

I use a bleed nipple that came off my old mk1 calipers, ts just the right size to bolt into the flexi hose hole and then I clip my foot pump on and push away. they don't fly out normally... just plop out kind of! :lol:

Thats what I did, stuck the 'pointy' red football attchment into the end of the cut off hose & pumped away.

 

I also put a bit of wood in the caliper to protect the end of the piston, just in case. Gave the pistons a gentle scrub with a scotchbrite pad (like the green kitchen scourers), coated the seals in brake fluid for lubrication & used a bench vise in work to press them back in (took a bit of force to get them back in)

Use a compressor, it's much easier as there's plenty of air to overcome any leaks, just keep your fingers out of the way :lol:
