G19MUD 0 Posted May 7, 2007 Anybody with any advice on this? Best route to take? Do I take engine out rip it to bits, and start rebuilding it? allthough, head gasket gone - currently steam power  Timing chains bit noisy  , bottom end bit grumbly  bought in this condition so don't know what else it may need! OR Do i take it out and source another unit? Does anyone out there know any reconditioners to trust? Or where to source another GOOD Motor?? Any help appreciated! Thanks!! double-6s 0 Posted May 7, 2007 I'm gonna have a 10k mile genuine new VAG 2.9 up for sale soon mate. Dunno if it will be too expensive for what you want though, as it's worth mucho dollar! :)
andy 0 Posted May 8, 2007 When will that be double-6s, what sort of price do you think it will fetch?
double-6s 0 Posted May 8, 2007 I'm not sure how much it's worth mate - i need to research it a bit and try and work it out. Will be soon - as soon as I can decide on a replacement.
drunkenmunkey 0 Posted May 8, 2007 Personnaly I don't think it sounds too bad, if you're bottom ends knocking you have 2 options - Get hold of a 2.8 [AAA] engine, you should get a completish one for £250 if you hunt and have the block bored [£150max], then presuming the pistons etc are OK stick them back in [with new shells and rings], stick the 2.8 head on [with new seals] or have yours skimmed [£30], change the chains & tensioners while the engines out, maybe the clutch et voila! a new block that shouldn't need touching for 50K and you can sell the remaining bits... OR have the existing block honed or if it's too bad over-bored [see above] & go for some 82.5mm pistons [£450ish] & change chains etc....then stick a 'charger on it  EDIT: Just read that you'd be looking to get someone else to do this for you which obviously means more expense, if you were nearer I'd offer my services, have you got a mate with any mechanical inclination? 'Cause VR6 engines are pretty 'legolike' & straight forward..... if you have the right tools. Otherwise you could just stick a 2.8 lump in for the short term and get your 2.9 done as and when. Just my opinion though... Good luck
double-6s 0 Posted May 8, 2007 Actually you have way more than 2 options, but that's a couple of them. What about a 2.8/3.2 24v?
drunkenmunkey 0 Posted May 8, 2007 :D I was thinking the cheaper end of the spectrum, f##k it just get a 3.2 & turbo it!

G19MUD 0 Posted May 8, 2007 Good stuff! Let the research Commence!!!!
Roger Blassberg 0 Posted May 9, 2007 Also look on the web for http://www.Fourseasontuning.com a place in California which does genuine timing chain sets complete for $155 plus carriage. He also does pistons, bearings etc. With the US$ so weak it could be worthwhile even to pay for carriage and import duty. Speak to James West, he's the boss and owns a US spec VR6; he'll give you an estimate for the shipping costs. They open at 10 am local time (7 pm in UK) and accept PayPal. Best wishes RB
