yeah,sorry I found it b4 you posted.

Going blind.

doh.

All marks line up on cam sprocket crank shaft and fly wheel etc so i can re-new my belt and tensioner 2morrow.

:D

Do you know if a special tensioner tool is required,or can you improvise in some way.

fond this on the web, scuse the ugly link.

No need for the tool just do the nut up then put a small flathead screwdriver in one of the holes on the

tensioner and tighten the nut up with the spanner pushing against the screwdriver, not a very clear

explanation but it will make sense when you do it :)

right.

when i try and undo the bolts on the crank pulley the engine just spins anticlockwise .

Any suggestion.

I put the plugs back in in a vain attempt to get compression but that didn't work.

yea just slap it in gear, make sure you clean out the heads of the bolts and that your

spline is in all the way before you do it, or you will round them off! I had to use Irwrn

bolt grippers to get mine out so I replaced the lot from VW :)

good ol NTL or Virgin or whatever they call them selves now took my broad band down.

Anyhow ....no joy engine just spins back in the direction that i amtrying to wrench.

..

I'll need a driving refresher course by the time I'm done.

I assume you have it on axle stands at the front, try it with one wheel (front) on the ground ;-)

That will stop the engine turning if its in gear

Nope ,put one of her front paws on the ground and tried it in 1st but still no joy.

Then tried it in reverse coz i figured that as I am trying to un-do I need the resistance in the other direction,no joy.

????

How can that be if the clutch has engaged the engine?

The valve cover is on but not bolted att coz I woz lining the timing mark up etc .

Is it because of the lack of compression???

I gonna buy a impact wrench and a compressor if this goes on for much longer. :|

Stuck it in 5th and got the little lady to sit in the car and squeeze the brakes.

That locked the crank.

Great.

Got two bolts off.

When doing the third one the end of my socket reducer snapped off into the end of one of my socket drive extension rod things ...

My other extension drive rod is shorter and I couldn't get the proper leverage.

I think I may have had it at a slight angle coz i felt that soft feeling you get when u start to round off the bolt....NOoOOOo.

I think the bolts have only got a couple of attempts left in them so i think tomorrow I'm gonna get hold of an impact wrench and try to cleanly get the last two bolts off with that.

I'm getting there...

i think.

Gutted :( get a set of Irwin bolt grippers they are worth their weigth in gold

for removing those spline bolts that VW love so much!

Hope it gets a bit easier for you from here!

i think i have offended the gods.

Are these irwin bolt grippers special order items?

Or can i get them from a decent car shop?

You will get there keep the faith :-)

Mean time get yourself to machine mart or a good tool place, then ask for these

http://www.amazon.com/IRWIN-394001-Bolt ... B0000CCXVZ

Give the bolts a good soaking with plus gas then they will come off easy, then replace with

new bolts (they are cheap) and put a small dab of copper ease on them so there not such a

pig next time :-)

ta,back out in the rain soon;luckily i have a car port.

question:

does the big nut in the center have to come out 2?

If so I guess i can expect more fun and games.

Nope thats the crank bolt, dont mess with that.... UNLESS its not been changed for a DX bolt

and washer, use the search for more info on that.

Have you taken the water pump pulley off yet? As thats another fun one to remove with the belt

off!! :( I found jamming a screwdriver through it stopped it turning enough to get the bugger off

though :)

iirc you need to take it off to get at the bottom cam cover but best check, my memory is not what

it once was

Yeah that one is off,i'm gonna replace all those bolts too.

There rounded.

:)

I did that first so all the pulleys and belts held in place.

I did a google on DX bolt but I didn't find it

:?

Its a bolt in a star configuration.

Is that good or bad?

Star head usualy means its original.... have a read of this viewtopic.php?f=1&t=23101

And give some thought to replacing it at some point! Fortunatly mine didnt break it just worked loose till the timing

was so far out it wouldnt run anymore :( took me a while to figure out what had happened but at least it was easy to

get out...

ahh,the so called wondering bolt.!?

Yes I have heard of that happening.

I'm not changing it this time round.

If anything else went wrong I would be forced to go and play in traffic.

They will come off with the Irwins mate no worries :)

Best get that crank bolt changed when you can as well, risky leaving it imo but up to you :?
