Porker 924?? Unloved Child of Porsche/VAG

Hmm.. been thinking about another "Unloved model" addition to the fleet... Poor mans Porsche.. 924...

 

Anyone owned one or got first/second-hand advice for me?

 

Which Model? What spec? What to look out for?

 

And yes I know it's got an Audi engine...

The later 924S has a pukka Porsche engine, a slightly detuned version (150 bhp down from 163 bhp) of the original 944 engine.

not quite correct..........the first of the 924S's did have the detuned 150bhp 944 lump but the last year of them had the full fat 944 engine albeit down by 3bhp

 

 

I've had both...............and the 924S is the one to have out of them(in fact I bought my 924S again in 2004 and its awaiting me getting my arse in gear and getting it restored)............unless you have deep pockets then the 924 Carrera GT is the daddy,its little brother the 924 Turbo has too much potential for being a money pit

worth mentioning too that if you go down the 924/924Lux/924 Turbo/924 Carrera GT route that you won't get PAS and the 924/924 lux uses an Audi 4stud pcd,whereas the 924S/924 turbo and 924 Carrera GT use the normal 5stud Porsche pcd

 

also the reason the 924S had the detuned engine in the beginning is that it has superior aerodynamics to the 944 so they handicapped it..........also the 924 throughout its life had the same 3 dial dashboard,whereas although the 944 also used the same dashboard it was changed in 85 to the so called oval dash which is a far more modern looking dash,prices are really low for the 924/924S's but a decent 924 Turbo will cost close to £3-4k and as for the 924 Carrera GT your looking at £12k+ for one and they rarely come on the market

 

the 924/924lux ran from 76-85 with the 2.0 audi engine 125bhp,if they have the factory fitted sunroof this is removeable to give quite an open roof........almost targa effect but its not a targa,I only kept my one for 3 months and it was a 55k minter but once I drove tmy 924S the performance was chalk n cheese,even tho on paper its only 25bhp

 

you also have a few limited edition models,the main ones being the Martini which was white with Martini stripes,red carpets and red cloth seats,quite rare and collectable but they were only made in the late 70's so are based on the 924 2.0(audi engine),then the other worthwhile limited edition worth seeking out is the 924 S Le Mans from late 87 which was available in white(75) or black(75) with sports suspension extended bolster sports seats and other goodies and of course the 160bhp 944 lump,the 924S was launched in late 85 btw with 150bhp and optional PAS(std on autos) the PAS was standard on manuals from late 86/early 87

 

 

 

there was 2 flavours of Turbo Series 1's with 170bhp 78>81 then the Series 2 with 177bhp from 81-82,then there was the ultimate 924 the Carrera GT which had 210bhp which was more than the equivalent 911 SC had at the time(1980/81) these are collector pieces

Because unlike you I'm not keen on "sensible" cars! :lol: Plus I always promised myself a Porker.... and this seems the cheapest way in... although it'll probably spark a need for a 944 afterwards...

 

Thinking about the next bonus (whenever that happens) could pick up a 1/2 decent late 924S then...

 

Rodders, with the post 85 S is there anything I really need to look out (over and above the usual car stuff) for that's a deal-breaker?

Specific rust traps/expensive to replace bits/Transaxle issues?

 

Also is it easy to "uptune" the early S engine to the same level as the 944?

 

Handling? I guess it's pretty good, but is it easy to uprate too?

walk away from any 924S's that are smoking(same goes for the 944) as the bores are treated with something like Nikasil so can't be overbored cheaply,having said that they are extremely strong and any that do smoke have been abused from day one,bodywise they have galvanised shells so any rust is indictive of crash/paint repairs,tbh most of the de-tuned lumps have slightly over 150bhp,and the fact the lighter weight/better aerodynamics of the 924 shape makes them evenly matched to the 944,suspension wise they use the same set up as the 944 so anything available for the 944 can be used(its got torsion bar rear suspension btw),also walk away from anything needing a new clutch as its quite a long job and even marque specialists will charge well over £500 for do it(applies to the 2.0 too),the 924S/944 engine also needs a timing belt every 40k miles and you also have a balance belt to change too so budget £2-300 for that

 

trim-wise the dash is known for cracking and the headling always seems to detach,seats are known for splitting at the seams so just look unsightly,but 944/911 seats are the same so are readily available
