2.8 head on a 2.9 block?

I know this will have been covered before, but are 2.8 and 2.9 heads interchangable? My first thought would be no, but I thought I'd ask anyway. I did search, but I must of read through 30 pages before giving up.

all the 12v VR6 cylinder heads are the same, no differences at all, not even the cams

Best of my knowledge is oil return is different (bigger) on later heads....... could be wrong tho

Spoke to VW parts, said the part numbers for a head on a 94 Corrado were the same as a 94 and 97 Golf VR.
