LukeManic 0 Posted June 22, 2007 Hi guys, I'm keeping a close eye on my coolant level daily and have discovered that it never stays at the MAX level once filled. I've done some research and some people say that certain cars will eject coolant if it's filled to much so the coolant level sits between the MIN and MAX, is this true? So basically is it normal for coolant to site between the MIN and MAX when cold and rise to MAX when hot? Cheers.
Jim 2 Posted June 23, 2007 Thats the way it should ideally be - hovering between min and max. Does the level continue to drop though or does it reach that mid point and then stay there from then on?
Supercharged 2 Posted June 23, 2007 Yeah, as above don't fill to the max - it's an expansion tank and should reach that level when hot... basically it's a pressurised system (in order to raise the boiling point) but there is a relief valve in the blue cap. (if you have a black cap then it's likely that the valve is shot - maybe stuck open)
LukeManic 0 Posted June 23, 2007 ah great stuff, thanks guys - it seems to being doing what it should, it stays between MIN and MAX when cold and rises to MAX when hot, just putting my mind at rest, thanks again.
sim0n_parker 0 Posted June 23, 2007 ive got a black cap, ive notice alot of people change these for the blue ones? any reason why? also what sort of price? if its a common fault thing id rather swop it now then later on. chears simon
Jim 2 Posted June 23, 2007 Common fault is the reason really, just as Supercharged said.. definately worth swapping sooner rather than later. Think a new cap is about 7 quid from VW?
