Engine hunting after install

After getting my car to run the engine seems to hunt when on idle, quite embarassing tbh. Does the engine just need to learn its new settings? and will that settle it down?

or could it be something else?

It's a vr dinkle, the car used to be a valver I believe...

 

Sounds like an air leak of some sort. Does it go away when it's warm, and does the engine run ok above idle?

oops sorry forgot to say, ye its a vr. Used to be a valver like toad said. Think its sorted now, seemed to settle down when the air box was fitted.
