G60 Corrado wont start

Recommended Posts

I have a 1991 G60 that will not start. I was sitting in traffic when it just cut out and would not restart. Since this problem I've changed the piston rings and cam belt. I have fuel at the fuel rail and a spark at all the plugs. It tries to start but will not run. If the throttle is open it will just about run but like its only firing on 3 cylinders then cut out which is why I changed the rings. Upon changing the rings no damage to the inside of the engine was apparent and I'm thinking its electrical but don't want to start replacing anything until I have more of an idea what the problem is. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. After the rings were changed it ran perfectly for about a minute then would not start again.

It has me at a loss to what the problem is. My thoughts would be fuel pressure reg, one of the senders or something like that but I would only be guessing.

Or possibly the hall sender. Anyone know how to test it??

Thanks

Dave

Have you got AA cover or anything similar?? if so i'd call them out and let them diagnose it - the AA are particuarly good if you get one of there own vans...

I'd start by changing Ignition switch, ECU and FP relays anyway if original and then look at the Hall sender and coolant temp sender

Thanks for the info. No AA cover as I took the Corrado off the road for the winter and to do a few jobs on it.

I've been advised to change the ecu to inlet manifold pipe as well. Going to try at the weekend.

Might get a mate who has AA cover to sit in and say hes the passenger and cant get home............ :D Sneaky

Thanks Again

As mentioned above.... Check your timimg marks, its a simple procedure and there is loads of info on the forum about how to do it :?

Why give a garage loads of cash to do what you can do in 30 mins on your drive?

Hi Morado,

I have to agree with Dan. These so called 'VDub specialists' in my experience anyway are just an overpriced waste of your money. I'm not saying all of them but the last time mine went to the shop it came back with the oil return from the charger loose, which came off and dumped all the oil all over my engine bay and they had left the bottom bolt holding the rear shock on hanginging out. Lucky I checked thier work before I put it in a tree or a lampost or something.

Be warned I doubt they know much if any more that some people on this forum.

Right I've finally got it started......runs like a champ. Turned out to be the dreaded crank pulley. The keyway had snapped off.

Also drilled a 4.5mm hole through the new pulley with a pillar drill. When it was on I drilled through the hole into the end of the crank and knocked a roll pin in so hopefully it wont be happening again.

It had been to a garage and the crank pulley bolt had sheared while it was idling. They said it was in there care so they would order a new crank pulley and repair it for nothing. So I presumed it had been done as he said the company had sent them two pulley wheels by mistake and I could have it as he had no use for it. I see now that all he did was put a new bolt in, keep my car for ten days and give me the pulley he ordered.

I bet that was fun Dan.

Im lucky that a few of us share a 4 birth unit and we bought a second hand set of the big electric ramps from the mechanic over the road. Makes life much easier. And saves your back when removing tar spots.

Anyway thanks for all the advice everyone.....Much appreciated... :D
