timmaaah 0 Posted January 21, 2008 Hi all - poorly vr6 - been getting shocking mpg recently - like 17mpg if I'm really careful  . Also, when you take your foot off the gas, the engine tries to stall, then hunts up and down for a minute or two. After searching on this fine site I think it's probably the maf. I tried umplugging the maf whilst the engine was running and it made no difference, ie the engine revs stayed the same. Can anbody near me (Reepham/Norwich) let me try their maf before I shell out £216.53 with VW for a new one? I think it should only take a few minutes, as the symptoms are so bad. It's a 94 and has got the 6 pin connector (part no 021906461). I'm on holiday all this week, and need to try and get it sorted asap if I can. Thanks all in advance - Tim
Reggit 0 Posted January 21, 2008 You sure it's not the Lambda? I've tried unplugging the MAF on mine a while ago 'out of interest' and found the engine hiccoughed a little when it was unplugged, but then continued to idle as normal. You might get a better response if you ask a mod to move the topic to Engine Bay.
timmaaah 0 Posted January 22, 2008 Reggit - don't think it's the lambda - that was replaced 5-6 weeks ago - when the lambda was knackered I was still averaging 25mpg!

timmaaah 0 Posted January 23, 2008 Bigpants baby - is that one I can try or one I can buy? Only problem is I need to try one before buying a new one, and unless you're up here visiting a round trip of 500 miles is a bit too far - unless of course no one a bit more lcoal to me can help out!!! dr_mat 0 Posted January 26, 2008 You need to reset the ECU after changing the lambda. It will ignore the new lambda till you clear the error codes and it's a good idea to do it anyway when you change a major electronic sensor .. Note that on late VRs unplugging the MAF at idle will not be noticed by the engine. But I note you have a '94 with the six-pin MAF, so I don't have direct experience of running one of those.. Mine is a '95 with coil pack and 4-pin MAF..
