lee_golf_v5 0 Posted February 13, 2008 Been hearing a drone from the car recently, not all the time though. It doesn't seem to happen when turning, just randomly occurs and braking, pressing clutch, accelerating doesn't seem to get rid of it..... I thought it might be a wheel bearing, sounds like drivers side front wheel, I may be wrong as im not great with the mechanics of cars. lee_golf_v5 0 Posted February 14, 2008 My car is going into the garage in an hour, what else could I suggest they check..... could the driveshaft cause a hollow droning sound? If its the bearing or something else could they spot anything out of the ordinary while on ramps easy enough? Slightly off topic but im going to put in some 10w 40 castrol magnetec in, get the coolant changed, buy a new induction kit, but what difference would I expect to see by changing the distributor cap and the rotar arm....Im no mechanic but my work mate who used to have a valver says to do it. But I don't know what they do tbh and not sure what to look for in the car after having them done.... Any other cheap suggestions for me to change while its in there? lee_golf_v5 0 Posted February 16, 2008 The rear discs and calipers are quite badly rusted by the looks of it, could this cause the noise to occur randomly, and a hollow drone.....seeing as it is not triggered by turning I am less inclined to get the bearings changed now and just change discs and calipers and give that a go...... dinkus 10 Posted February 16, 2008 The rear wheel bearings are pressed into the brake disks - so if you change the disks you have to change the bearings too. If you're in there, it's a good idea to check: The handbrake cable boots are still intact (be careful not to rip then when re-fitting them to the calliper) The handbrake cables are free-moving The handbrake mech on the calliper is free-moving The boots are good on the carrier pins are intact The carrier pins are free-moving The calliper piston seal isn't twisted and/or torn The calliper piston is free-moving The carrier faces that the brake pads slide along is rust-free, allowing the pads to slide freely. Rear brake parts get expensive i'm afraid - I know becuase i did both my cars this year! Pads, Discs, ABS rings and bearings come to about £150 at dealer rrp inc vat, add new bolts and spash sheilds maybe...£175 Calipers - may as well use MK4 ones with the Goodridge conversion hoses - another £175... In theory all new parts make the job easier but still probably 2-3 hours labour with bleeding so anything less than £500 would be a good price...
