999AJC 0 Posted May 6, 2008 Hi Everyone I am really hoping someone on here will be able yo help me.. I have been having real problems with my '96 Golf GTi 8v and have been searching for an answer, knowing they are the same engines as the corrado I thought it was worth a shot on here? It cuts out and the oil light flashes, it has been getting progressively worse now it won't even go 50 yds without dying!! I replaced the Crank sensor which worked for a short while but then it cut out again so I replaced the ECU power relay (No. 30) and that worked for even longer, about 150 miles, then it cut out again!. I was going to replace the Hall sensor next but it isn't giving as a fault code on the diagnostics (even when the car is broken down!), what is also strange is that when the car is running I can unplug the hall sender and it makes no difference!. Also the No. 30 relay that I replaced seems to be very hot!, also the relay No. 36?? seems to 'click' when the car cuts out but I'm not sure what this one is! The problem is I've spent so much on it recently that I don't want to keep going, I have done thew cambelt and full service new brakes new exhaust and now this!, the car has done 150,000 miles and I have a 50 mile trip to work everyday!! CAN ANYONE HELP??
Supercharged 2 Posted May 6, 2008 Welcome to the forum! Does the engine run ok when it does work? Does it start up again straight away after cutting out? No fault codes at all? Have you changed the ignition switch?
999AJC 0 Posted May 6, 2008 Hi thanks for such a quick response, Yes the engine runs perfectly when it is working No the car won't start straight away after it's cut out, if I leave it 10 mins it will start again but not for long as I say it is getting progressively worse! No, no codes what so ever! In 2003 (according to a receipt I have) the Ignition coil/module was replaced by the AA after the car cut out and wouldn't re start! Supercharged 2 Posted May 6, 2008 Yeah could be the coil again - especially if they used a non genuine one when they changed it... Do you have any breakdown cover? you really need to get a diagnosis before spending any more cash...
999AJC 0 Posted May 6, 2008 I thought about the coil but it just seems really odd that the oil light flashes and the rev counter dies but the other gauges stay ok? Breakdown cover is no longer an issue it's in my mates garage in bits and as I say he's already put his diagnostic machine on it to no avail! Thanks for your help though! Supercharged 2 Posted May 6, 2008 I think the above is normal tho (on cut out) - the oil light would flash as it does with ignition on but engine not started... I would try another switch anyway as it's on 150k, it sounds like an electrical fault as long as fuel is getting to the engine ok?
weetos 0 Posted May 6, 2008 anyone had the fuel pump out? 1 way valve refitted wrong way round ? Happed on my bros cabbie
999AJC 0 Posted May 6, 2008 No one has had the fuel pump out to the best of my knowledge. Which switch would you replace? The oil light is a static light with the ignition on but not engine running not a flashing one!
dirtytorque 0 Posted May 7, 2008 does it cut out under braking,i.e when you appoach junctions or is it totally random?
999AJC 0 Posted May 7, 2008 Totally random  , usually after being driven reasonably hard (but not always!), it's not the throttle body if that is where you were going, I've tried that too!!

tomvass83 0 Posted July 31, 2008 Did you manage to fix your problem on the golf. I think i'm having the same issue on my corrado 16v 1.8 '90 I reckon it must be the coil as i changed the dizzy to no avail
