16v Easy wire identification please

How do chaps,

 

Can someone please identify this stray wire i have?

Its on the drivers side coming from the loom on the inner wing and its just hanging around...If someone could grab a pic of where it goes or explain it would be superb.

I have that wire too. When I took my airbox out the other day it was just sitting underneath it. If it helps, mine still has a female spade connector on the end. Perhaps it is an earth for the valves etc in the intake system?

Looks like the cable that goes to the fan overrun switch on the O/S front of the rocker cover.

 

Try grounding the wire somewhere and see if the rad fan comes on. :wink:

He's right you know. Mine just came on low speed!

 

I've reconnected my lead to the little 1-pin thermistor(?) thing on the bottom left edge of the head, IIRC this is where it should be plugged in...

I reckon so. It won't turn the fan on when it's plugged into the switch cold though as the switch only grounds when the head gets hot, hence it being the run-on switch.

 

but try touching it to the inlet and your fan should come on slowly :salute:

Id need to find the bracket too as thats also missing, but i can possibly knock sommet up.

it's embedded to the bracket :salute: so it's all a one-piece that you just bolt onto the block.

 

do you have a little bit of thread sticking out on that corner of the head?

not all of them have it, mine doesnt and ive seen a few others that dont. i have a sender for it on the back of the head with a wire already atached. The fan stil functions correctly so i insulated it and tucked out of the way. it may just be that all the 16vs have it but it isnt always used

I would be surprised if there were 16vs without it, it's a safety feature which keeps the radiator fan on after the engine is turned off. Obviously the water pump won't still be going so the cooling is limited to just the coolant in the radiator, but it should still be working I would have thought.

yea my fan was working correctly then one day when it was bucketing down the fan came on and never turned off! bit of a poke around and i saw that same stray wire dangling down behind the airbox in a tiny puddle of water. it was earthing against the bodywork. i tried to look for that sender but i never found it. Then i saw one on the back of the head thats why i insulated it and tucked it away

I guess you can put it anywhere, it just absorbs the heat from whatever it's attached to which then changes the internal resistance. When the resistance falls to zero, the wire obviously earths and the fan comes on.

 

Then when the jobby cools down, the resistance goes up and the fan shuts off.
