kaiserVR6 0 Posted July 3, 2008 Right well my motor is playing up again! Drove to work this morning and when i left the steering was fine and easy to turn etc, when i arrive at work the steering is now very heavy and there is a clicking noise when i try to turn the wheel!? Has the pump gone?
Supercharged 2 Posted July 3, 2008 Check the belt tension and fluid level first
boost monkey 0 Posted July 3, 2008 Obvious belt slip will be a steering wheel that "twitches" when you turn it, esp on full lock. Pump tends to click when it doesn't have fluid running through it, and is linked to engine rpm for regularity of clicking. hth.
kaiserVR6 0 Posted July 3, 2008 yeah i need a new pump, is fooked! now the question is, is it ok to drive it 120 miles with it like that until the morning when i get it in the garage to get it fixed??
boost monkey 0 Posted July 3, 2008 Let me put it this way, my rack has been leaking for so long that i'm 99.9% sure the pump has been pumping air for at least 8 weeks. I guess it could be dead now though
kaiserVR6 0 Posted July 3, 2008 looks like i am going to chance it, i have the 4th emergency service should anything major go wrong... i was just a bit concerned that its belt driven and don't know what else is driven on the same belt - all i need is for that to go and then the rest of the stuff pack in me as a consiquence! kaiserVR6 0 Posted July 3, 2008 Banana Man more like! but i take it that driving it home from work and back again is going cause no extra damage is it?
boost monkey 0 Posted July 3, 2008 It won't disintegrate if that's what you mean. It's obviously not recommended, but i think it will be ok. I once refilled my PAS fluid, and the steering was perfect until the slow leak drained the little reservoir, so I'm thinking PAS pumps are pretty strong. dr_mat 0 Posted July 3, 2008 Worst case scenario is the pump seizes and shreds your aux belt, but that's highly unlikely. Actually no, worst case scenario is the rack gets knackered cos it dries out, but that's also highly unlikely.

Having stripped a rack myself, I'd be highly surprised if a rack ever got bone dry  always seems to be some grease/fluid it in even if it's just an annular coating.
