Anyone work at Halfords?

Recommended Posts

The staff can be pretty terrible... one guy that worked there just before I left didn't know what a car jack was.. and what you did with it.

Needless to say.. he worked on the parts department!

On the other hand.. you can often come across some absolute gems.. another guy I know is completely refurbing and rebuilding a mk2 escort and loves his cars so knows quite a bit. Shame they all get tarred with the same brush... but the training is non-existant so it's hardly surprising.

It sounds like thats not an isolated case then. One guy at my local branch knows everything you could want to know, then theres the lads who dont have a clue. Then theres a couple of lasses who know squat about cars.

 They're all just rubbish really. Annoying things I have very pedantically noticed:

Headlight bulb change - Guy does it from outside of the engine bay... which cars have EVER had bulbs you can plug in from the front? :nono:

Paint job 1 - girl with the light blue car comes in with a scratched front wing and the guy buffs it back and resprays it to a perfect shine within about 5 seconds

Paint Job 2 - Man asks for paint for a red '68 mini. Guy says "Yes, Flame Red" and Man says "That's right! How did you know that?" IF YOU KNEW THE COLOUR, WHY DID YOU ASK FOR IT! :bad-words: :cuckoo:

Wiper change - When have you ever seen a Halfords person come out in the pouring rain to change wiper blades? :hitler:

Roof box - the only reason you'd have one of these is if your boot is full of dead hookers. :drinking:

I know it's just an advert, but they're still all funny things. to any flamings (unless they're 1968 Mini red  ) And yeah I still use Halfords tons  :luvlove:

find the Halfords ads in the breaks for Top Gear quite hilarious!

lol - the one with the guy demo'ing the head unit with the pop out video screen and the customer is like "Oh, cool!" as if he didn't know it did that - like the just went in to Halfords and asked them to stick in ANY head unit and held out a handful of money or something?! Surely he knew what he was getting before they installed the fecking thing in his car!!

 glad i wasnt the only person to think that ha!

What about the one where he's demo'ing the sat nav and he says, 'just do it like i showed you', the driver then presses the sat nav screen once and the halfords bloke says something like 'hey, there you go'. ALL YOU DID IS PRESS ONE BUTTON!

 maybe a little too observant from me.

LOL thats my mate in the ad's hes a manager for halfords, he dont get paid any extra for adverts... tight wads!

hey ye itl prob b mid september before its back down in price...if u have a trade card its still £99.99 tho!! As for staff, you get good and bad people yea, at the end of the day, there employed as sales staff, not mechanics, most of them employed should have at least an interest in cars tho! The lassies are employed as cashiers usually so again, as long as they are inteligent enough to work the tills etc, thats all thats expected of them.

My local Halfrauds only ever see me if its a desperate emergency on a sunday.....or i cant be arsed to go to Maidstone for my Meguiars supplies

To be fair in my local one it would be hard to gauge wether any of the staff are inteligent or knowledgable, as they all seem to busy mucking around in the bike section or on their mobile phones! and you have to literally grab hold of one of them or set the security alarms off to get their attention

The prices for bulbs and stuff like that is ridiculous, you can get bulbs, genuine spark plugs and oil filters, and Bosch wiper blades cheaper from a normal VW retailer without any discount!!

The car park is always full of "Crapspeed" and "Lax power" saxo, corsa, type cars whenever i go there, so maybe thats who keeps them afloat

You would surprised how much you get off them with the halfords trade card, i bought a set of brake pads for the van the other day and they where £24.99 normally but only £12.50 with the trade card, headlight bulbs went from about £12.99 a pair to £3.49, oh and i recently got a water pump there on a sunday as i needed it in an emergency, and it went from £36 to

£17 quid

Err yeah with a trade card the bulbs and service parts are peanuts - way cheaper than any motorfactor now!

Cleaning stuff when on offer is cheaper than at most shows too...

Yeah the 3 for 2 offers are always worth consideration  it comes back to the age old question when it comes to car parts, i know some people run after market cheaper alternatives without any probs, but i feel like im insulting my cars if i put "other" parts on them, unless its a quality branded type reversible modification, i personally think it de values the car, if anyone ever buys a car off me its plain to see its what it was built as, and has remained as bolts and all! anything damaged, missing or worn is replaced

Maybe im a bit daft  but i would rather pay £35 for an original water pump from VW TPS (as i have an account :D ) than pay less for non genuine elsewhere, emergencys aside i would never use pattern parts if i could help it

same with brakes, original eqpt works fine in most situations, its designed and tested, i dunno if i could trust some of these so called alternatives

every VW i have ever offered for sale has gone to the first viewer  so i must be doing something right

just go in and ask. I was working for Volvo at the time and had my payslip to prove it but the guy didn't ask to see it. You never know, it might be worth a try

really meant to see a payslip etc to prove your in the trade but the manager can also use thier discretion so its worth a try. we have trade budgets as well so i dont think twice about signing anyone up tbh!

So is there any way for us non-mechanic types to swindle a trade card?

I'm not a mechanic

Just be cheeky and ask for one, the worst they can do is refuse.

The pump that was on it was a 6 month old genuine VW pump, for some reason the whole bearing carrier assembly in the waterpump had decided to slide out of the casing, causing the shaft and impeller to move across and jam the water pump pulley against the power steering pulley and destroy my toothed belt and power steering belt, my mate also had a seal failure on a two week old vw pump on his mk1 cabby, so i dont really trust them any more than a pattern part, (as long as its not a Eurocrapparts one) the new one seems very well made and uses SKF seals so cant be that bad, and like i said i needed it to get me home on a sunday and halfords was the only place open with one on the shelf.

As for the brakes they are only on my van so i dont really care how crap they are, although i have used them on the corrado in the past, i just found them a bit dusty but couldnt fault the braking power, and unlike the two sets of EBC greenstuff pads i have had, they didn't fall apart under heavy braking, and the disks they sell are mostly made by a brake manufacturer that is local to me called Brake Engineering, who also make custom disks for motorsport and even replacement disks for ferrari's, I know as i wired up the robotic arm in the factory that moves them between the CNC milling and balancing machines

Dont get me wrong, halfords do sell a lot of utter crap, the majority of the staff appear to be part of some care in the comunity scheme, and some of the prices are rediculous.

But, the PRO tools are excellent, and they are convinient if you need something out of normal hours, or on a sunday when most dealers or motor factors are shut, and if you know someone who works there you can get some cracking deals on audio equipment, like my pioneer Avic 9 II DVD navigation system that i got for £150 quid reduced from £700
