I recentrly bought a 96 plate Polo 1.6 to use as a daily runner while i sort my C out, the problem now is it wont bloody start. It cut out as i was driving and when i try to start it, it just whines.

Any ideas what this could be, i know nothing about polos so im stuck.

could it be the starter?

A starter wouldn't really cause it to cut out. When you say it whines, does it actually turn over?

Hi

Can you turn the engine over by hand ?

how do you turn the engine over by hand?

Don't wanna scare you but have you had a look at the timing belt?

bang on,take off the oil cap (if you can see the cam) is it turning as you crank?

sorry not very mechanically minded is the timing belt a big job? the car has only done 50 000 miles is it likly to be this?

thanks

regardles of the milage the cambelt can snap at anytime, the cam belt keeps the valves intime with the stroke of the pistons hence 4 stroke.

changing the belt is not a bog job but when the belt snaps,99% of the time you will have bent valves,is it snapped?

can you pull the camcover off and see if the belt is on?

Hi

Car in neutral, wear gloves and then pull the 'fan' belt.

Bang on.....

After sitting on my parents drive for nealy 5 months i managed to get it to the garage for them to have a look, As suggested above the cam belt had snapped, bending the valves. Iv been quoted over a grand to get it fixed so there goes my daily driver.

Anyone fancy a F*****D polo???
