db82 0 Posted September 27, 2008 I changed the very worn out belt on my 1.8 16v rado this afternoon. the belt in question goes round three pullys, from what i have read this belt also powers the water pump the change went very well apart from a bit of wd 40 required on one bolt but there was no real problem. but something has gone wrong as my power steering no longer works. the belt seems to rotate with out a problem, but if my powersteering isn't working what chances are there that my water pump isn't working. not to sure what to do as garages are closed tomorrow and i need the car for work next week. how do i check that the waterpump is working fine ? many thanks for any help i recieve Dave
boost monkey 0 Posted September 27, 2008 When you loosened the PAS pump bolt to slacken off the PAS belt, did you tighten it up again? Sounds like perhaps the belt is just sitting loose on the pulleys. When it's tightened try to TWIST the belt. you should only be able to rotate it through 1/4 turn (90 degrees). The water pump has another pump on it which is driven by the crankshaft, and also runs the alternator too. Check to see if either of the 2 water pump pulleys are turning as they are both bolted to the water pump shaft which turns the blades inside the pump.
