16v - Cylinder/bore surface rust & general crud

Hello guys,

 

Seeming as my old engine failed me, I felt that now is the perfect time to get on with a swap. However, there is slight surface rust on the cylinder walls of my new block, and i've noticed some loose dirt that has collected on top of the pistons.

 

Will wirewool + WD40 be ok to gently take off the rust? Or due to it being 'light' rust, would it come of after firing? I doubt it would need a re-hone.

 

What can I do to remove the dirt? I've taken out what I can, but i need peace of mind! Would it be advisable to change the rings?

 

This is my first swap, so it's all part of the learning curve! Any help would be appreciated,

I wouldn't use wire wool in an assembled engine, or at all!

 

I'd take it apart and flick hone the bores, you know it's good then.

you could try and blast some carb cleaner in there

Cheers for the reply, I guess i'll have to look into this 'flick honing' malarky - Just figured that a gentle abrasive rub will lift that rust off! (and be cheaper). Didn't think any mild scratches would matter so much, as i've seen a honed cylinder! silly me :embarassed:

There's some good you-tube vids on flick honing and all I've found are SFW :lol:
