What does it do and is it needed?

Hi all,

 

I fitted a new ISV damper pot on my VR over the weekend. As you know it has 2 pipes coming off it at the bottom, but it also has another pipe at the top leading to air intake pipe. Now i noticed the new pot doesnt have a hole where the pipe attaches. So i thought i would carefully drill a hole. However, i noticed that on the old one it seems to be a a dead end (checked by putting a small drill bit into the hole and seeing how far i can push it in) and i cant feel the sponge in the pot, it just feels like im hitting plastic.

 

What is this pipe for that connects from the air intake pipe to the top of the damper pot and is it needed?

AFAIK, it's just a blank for holding the damper pot still.

Cheers VR6. Seems odd that they used a pipe from the intake pipe to just hold it still.
