Intercooler question. Pls help guys

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I was wondering if it is actually possible to break an intercooler without physically breaking it?

The reason I ask is I have a MR2 turbo as well as my corrado and made the massive mistake of giving it to a horrible local garage to have the engine and turbo rebuild. I got it brake and the ignition timing was out. Then got it back after sorting that problem and blew the weak head gasket they had put in it. Now im convinced the turbo has gone as it doesnt spool up anymore. The guy at the garage said that its not the turbo, the intercooler has gone. Is that even possible?

Im really not that upto scratch with FI cars so any help will be much appreciated.

(no hairdresser jokes please, ha ha.)

i'd ask the garage how they reached that conclusion.

The only way i can descride it is that the car doesnt have any boost at all. I like its not turbocharged. The guy who owns the garage is a complete ****** so I would believe a single word that comes out of his mouth.

are you sure that they corrected the ignition timing properly?

Its hard to diagnose probs like this from a distance.

unless u have a friend who is good with cars i'd take it to a good garage to evaluate the issue.

An intercooler is just a radiator that air just passes through.

If it is broken in some way and leaking then all the air from the turbo will not make it into the engine.

Is the intercooler in a place where you can eyeball it?

I really would ask them why they think it is "broken"

yeah the ignition is definitely spot on now.

The problem is that I paid £2k for the work to be done. He has guaranteed the work for 60k miles. I have only done 4k in it. The thing is, i dont want this guy to get away with taking my money and then palming me off to someone else when he should of done the job properly first time round.

The intercooler looks physically fine. Thatsa why I cant understanf he is blaming it on that.

I guess that why people take their car to specialists. I could have a nice vr6 with the money Im throwing at that car.

if it is not leaking boost and it is not blocked then there is nothing else to go wrong with them. :|

So ask him,do you think it is blocked or do you think it has a hole in it?

I think he's taking the michael personally.

I feel for you mate :( ,

I overhauled the engine on my mate's gen.2 mr2 turbo, right bastid of a job and i did it for free...

Anyway, seeing as the intercooler is a compleat pig to get to i'd first check that the fixing clamps have actually clamped the boost hoses,it's esay to miss the hose and as soon as the turbo boosts it pops off the hoses.

Is the turbo actually boostin?,does the instrument panel boost gauge register?.

Make sure that this garage tensioned the cambelt properly, nitemare to do in situ.

Make also sure that the car's cooling system has been bled, again another bastid of a job.

1 other thing, the fuel filter is easily fitted the wrong way up,the 'in-out' letters aren't immidiatly visable

and i've seen them fitted backwards.

Thanks for the info guys.

I called him up, basically said I was sick and tired of him palming me off. I have told him that seeing as the turbo is "under guarantee" he should send it back to get it checked.

One thing I can confirm is that this guy isnt getting any more of my money! :mad2:
