Hey all,

 

im new here - just bought a Corrado 16v (can be seen here: http://www.evoposters.net/cars/davescars -i sold the immaculate black Golf to buy it!)

 

Ive found a few problems with it since i bought it last weekend tho - apparently the front cross member is really rusty and ideally needs a new one welded in and also apparently the exhaust middle boxes are covered in past welds! It also needs rear pads (easy to change?) and two new tyres. Ho hum!

 

luckily my girlfriends Dad is a welder so hopefully he can assist! Also it might just be the garage being melodramatic!

 

Anyway, just wanted to say Hi!

requires a tooll to wind the piston on the rear caliper back ion.

 

my cross member is a tad rusty in places too. Think its where the battery has bust or the rad. Check your battery tray. mine was fine when i got the car but the acid damage was already set in. Gonna replace it when the weather is better.

CHeers mate.

 

Ive been told by my local VW specialists that its not a job i should attempt as you have to set it all up again afterwards - how true is this? Should i have a crack at it myself or not?!

Doing the rear brakes is easy as it's the same process as a MK2 Golf. Just be careful you don't disturb the ABS ring or sensor - if fitted to your car.

Takes about 15 mins per side once the car is jacked up.

 

If the calipers are seized (locked on) the good news is MK4 rear calipers are a direct replacement and are cheap.

 

As for the exhaust, well any Corrado owner will tell you the system is bloody heavy, something VW didn't think about too much when designing the brackets. When you ask VW for a replacement system, many people resort to the welder!

The brackets are weak from the Cat back, shouldn't worry about it too much.

 

The subframe... hmm, I've only ever seen one rot right through, so it's probably more cosmetic than structural. Rusty subframes and rear axles are indicative of cars that have lived on the coast, but not always. Just brush the loose rust off and and apply a liberal coat of black waxoyl.

Ive had the car up on ramps, and the exhaust isnt hanging off at all! Its been welded more than once, and its got a couple of small holes - but its far from falling off!

 

I dont know which crossmember it is - garage told me it holds the bodywork together and its welded in, but ive spoken to a mate who said theres two there - one minor one thats NOT structural and is bolted in and a MAJOR one thats welded and supports the engine!

 

I think the garage is taking me for a mug TBH - he quoted me £95 to supply and fit rear pads - local VW specialist want £52+vat for the same job!

 

Im tempted to do the pads myself, but i dont want to cock it up! Plus, by the time ive bought the tool and pads etc, id just as well get it done!
